Medical/dental question for those who might know

I got that tooth pulled two weeks ago. It's healing great. But I had to switch sides of my mouth to chew on, to a side that has a cracked tooth and a broken cover on a root canal. Since I started chewing on that side again, there's a weird pain. It's ringing a bell, like it's serious and I should know what it is and it has a name, but I can't remember.

The pain kind of centers around the cracked tooth. There's sharpish dullish shooting pains there. But whether that pain is there or not, there's a pain that crawls up the back of my skull, along my ear drum like an ear ache, along the top of my mouth, and down the back of my throat where some gland is that's hurting. And I'm getting dizzy from time to time. It's all only on the right half of my head/body. Anyone have a name for this?

I can't afford a doctor until they get my benefits fixed, and my dentist is out of town.

One of our newest members, REX01, is a dental assistant. Maybe she can help if you PM her (in case she doesn't see this).

I think there's a big nerve that is involved in the face that might be what you are experiencing twinges on - trigeminal nerve? The reason I think of it is because a friend of mine just had a shingles-type inflammation of this nerve, and it took a lot of effort to figure out what was going on; she had eye, sinus, dental, ear and neck pain plus dizziness.

Here's the Wiki article on it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trigeminal_nerve

Now, as far as what to do about it? My friend is taking an antiviral plus an epilepsy medication that tamps down the nerve sensitivity until it all heals up. I don't know what to suggest for you but maybe someone else has an idea?

I hope this helps...

Wow. I haven't even finished reading it yet, but that drawing of where that nerve is is a PERFECT diagram of everywhere that pain is striking, even to the extent of where the pain is under my jaw. Thanks!

The first thing I thought of was nerve pain by the way you described the symptoms. Do you have any swelling, redness, etc. at the area where it hurts the most?

I thiiiink just inside of the mouth. The gums & roof of my mouth on the right side are swollen & achy, and a swollen nub below my tongue. That nub's often swollen though, maybe I poke at it too much. Maybe a little on the outside, right at the hinge of my jaw, but that could be me being a hypochondriac. It's a barely there thing. Again, I probably poke at it too much.

Your mouth is VERY sensitive, it has to be, so any poking or whatever is going to make a small problem worse.

Yeah, I'm stupid that way. I can never resist poking at things I shouldn't.

We all do that..it's called human nature.

You don't think it's infected, do you?

It kind of ACTS like something's infected that runs through those areas...I was thinking an infected vein or something? But I JUST got off of a week of penicillin that killed the infection that WAS there (that tooth used to smell bad when I disturbed/brushed it, now it doesn't), so I've honestly doubted it. Nerves sound more appropriate than infection, though I wouldn't know nerve damage if I had it.
