My other "Kids"

I wanted to share with you my other "kids". I have 2 male Chinchilla's named Gizmo and Harley.

Gizmo: He is 4 years old standard grey. He loves to be held and hang out in the hood of my sweatshirt and of course he is a mama's boy .

Harley: He is 1 year old standard grey. I actually rescued him about 3 months ago. A lady posted an add on craigslist stating that she could no longer keep him that she was going to let him go free in the woods if no one took him by the weekend. Of course I'm a big moosh and took him home with me. This lady does not know what she is missing. He is a little fluff ball, loves his scratches and the occasional treat.

I hope you enjoyed

Aww, they are so cute. I've never known anyone who had them as pets. How cool that they are cuddlers.

Oh WOW. I love Chins

We had chinchillas for about 20 years. We had a pair, 1 "standard" (and a prize winner), and one "beige". We called them Charlie and Camilla (a few months before the real couple was made public ).

They had about 6 babies over time, some died very soon, but some lived for a long time.
Our last one died last summer.

We got Peggy as a result as we personally felt it wouldn't be fair on any of them to have a cat and a small furry creature in the same house.

A few facts
They are (believe it or not) related to porcupines
They come from the high Peruvian Andes
They don't lick themselves to wash, they bathe in very fine sand
A human has one hair per follicle, a chinchilla has 60-80!!
They were hunted almost to extinction because of their fur.

I had Gizmo first, I have had him since he was 4 months old. About 2 months after I bought him I adopted Tessie. Since Tessie was so young I tought her not to go near the chinchilla cage and to leave Gizmo alone. Tessie is so tame with the chin's now because when I let the boys out to play, She will just sit there and watch them.
Chinchilla's are very easy too take care of but they need alot of attention.

Oh absolutely.

A funny story:

We had had the chins for about 3 years, so we were quite comfortable about letting them run around a bit. One evening, we had one of the top guys in the field my dad works in (Biochemistry), and he was quite a serious bloke. Me and my bro were on our best behaviour. Charlie wasn't

He was brought out to show off to this guy, and made a run for it. 10 minutes later, we had the head of the Biochemical Society on his hands and knees behind the sofa, trying to tempt Charlie out with a raisin.
