Jury Duty Scam

Snopes says it's true............FBI link below is real...............

Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below).
Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is
spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take
those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on
their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you
never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your
Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the
information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this
information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma ,
Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious
because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into
giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI
and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web
sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Con artists are really good at what they do, unfortunately, and can be very convincing. Thanks for the heads up, Leazie.

I've heard about this.

But I just got a REAL jury duty notice last week. I hope I get picked.

Re: Jury Duty Scam

I am OK since I am not a US citizen (yet!) but this is very scary! I can't believe this, such low calibre people to say the least!
This is so wrong in so many ways!!

It always annoys me that people have nothing better to do with their time, than to try to scam people out of their hard earned money. For goodness sake..............get a real job!

I got a call like that once, when I lived in Metairie, LA. I immediately hung up on them because I know real jury summons arrive in the mail. I thought it was just some ignorant kid...

You mean people have actually given this info out over the PHONE?

Oh dear.... Nasty thing to do, but it wouldn't work if people used their noggins.

True, Huge, but sometimes I do think 'There but for the grace of God...'
You just need to be caught off guard. Plus it's easy for old and vulnerable people to be tricked.
I'm just glad my ancient father is too addled to know his own details, so he could never give them out to anyone

Fair point. Didn't think of that.

Unfortuantely they often target older people just because they are a vulnerable group as a whole .
