What new pet did I get...?

A Guinea Pig! I have never had one so I have a lot to learn! I just joined a guinea pig forum so I should get tons of help. Hopefully it is as helpful as this forum.

She came with a cage as well, we just went and bought her all the stuff to put in it! Very exciting........

The guinea pig is already a year old or so.

She came from a little girl who had already named her Cherry...

But I was thinking of changing it, cause I don't really like it Do you think that's bad/mean?

I have not picked one yet.

She won't mind a new name .

Guinea pigs are very sweet! We had them when I was a kid, and we loved them. I remember how they squeaked with happiness when they saw us coming with greens and treats...

Enjoy your new girl! Fran

A couple points while I'm bored at work:

1. No pine/cedar bedding *but i think you have hammies, so you probably already know that* They're TOXIC and will cause respiratory disease in your pets. Pigs pee a LOT. A LOT! Paper based beddings are good choices for them.. Carefresh (pricey), Yesterdays News (more cost effective!).

2. Piggers need LARGE amounts of timothy hay *NOT alfalfa!*, veggies, and ORANGES/STRAWBERRIES (which are high in Vit C and piggers cant produce that for themslves and NEED lots to survive and not get scurvy!).

3. Pellets should be MINIMAL, if ever, in the diet.

4. HUGE cages are a must. C&C homemade cages are a fav around pigger sites, as they're cheap and easy. Also, HUGE!

5. Piggers are -social- and really should be in same sex pairs. You've adopted an older girl, but when you upgrade her cage, please consider getting her a friend.

Thanks Kelly - I appreciate the tips. I do want to get her a friend eventually. I know about the bedding and the vitamin C. Did not know about the pellets though.

The recommended cage size for one is 7.5 sq ft and mine is only 6. She came with this cage and I thought it was okay - seems that it is not. If/When I decide to get her a friend I will need to upgrade. I want to look around first tho - not just buy at a pet store.

Am I right that the C&C's are open top cages? How could I manage this with 3 cats?

I wanted to get creative and make a ramp/second level with all that overhead free space but don't exactly know how.

Oh - and I renamed her Charlotte

Most C&C cages have no tops because piggers can't jump. People make bun cages out of C&C and just use the grids for the tops as well! So you -can- actually make tops for them.

6 isn't going to hurt her if she gets out for playtime daily (and that will somewhat -but not entirely- make up for no buddy). I don't think she could have asked for a better mom! I'd probably keep the 6 cage until you can get the C&C for her, no point wasting money on store bought cages *when none are really suitable*.

More pictures please! My favourite thing about pigs are their LIPS!
