Did you understand the ending of Brokeback Mountain?

I finally caught the last 20 minutes of Brokeback Mountain on TV yesterday. (When I saw it in the theater, I had to leave early because of a bad coughing fit. Don't you hate that?)

So the questions are (possible spoilers here, in case someone still intends to see it for the first time):

1. Anne Hathaway tells Ennis how Jack died with the story about changing a tire. While she tells it, you see that Jack was actually beaten to death. Are we supposed to think that Anne Hathaway knew the truth and was covering it up, or didn't know the truth?

2. At the end, Heath Ledger looks in the mirror and says, "Jack, I swear." I swear WHAT?

SPOILERS

Had to go back and look - I have a copy of the story on my computer from years ago, before its reprinting was a big ol' cash cow.

The short story makes clear that it's been reported that Jack was killed freakishly while changing a tire, but that Ennis suspects otherwise, because of something he'd seen as a boy - and it is strongly alluded to in the story that Ennis believes it was Jack's father who did it.

The statement at the end, I think, is open for interpretation.

In the movie Ennis does say that he suspected his father might have been involved in the hate crime that killed the rancher when he was a boy. We see the scene where 9-year old Ennis is seeing the dead body in the river bed. I sure wouldn't have gotten that Ennis thought Jack's father might have been involved in Jack's death, though. You just never know what differences there might have been between the book and movie.

So I guess the best guess is -- Anne Hathaway knew she was telling a lie when she said the story about the tire.

Right, which is why I say what was in the story (not a book, actually a very very short story) - Ang Lee stayed absolutely true to the short story. I don't recall seeing any liberties that countered what was in the story, down to Ennis' visualization while talking to Jack's father. And that's what the visualization meant.

In the story, it notes Lureen as having been very cold when she told Ennis about how Jack died, so it's certainly possible that she knew. I never really thought much about it.
