Scientist/Anthrax Suspect --Suspected Suicide

Bruce E. Ivins, one of the foremost scientists in Anthrax research, died of what appears to be suicide. A friend, who remains anonymous, said Ivins had taken massive amounts of prescription Tylenol and Codeine. The friend was afraid he would be subject to FBI harassment.

Although his name had not been revealed publicly as a suspect, the Justice Dept. was about to arrest Ivins for the Anthrax deaths in 2001. Ivins had been informed that prosecution was imminent. Ironically, Ivins had "assisted" the FBI in the Anthrax investigation. He was a highly respected, skilled scientist.

How ironic.

On the news on the radio I heard that the Justice Dept had said they were planning on asking for the death penalty when the perp was caught. Sounds like he served as his own judge, jury and executioner. Denied the state their retribution. I'm against capital punishment, BTW.

And so am I. Of course, I wouldn't have wanted to see him released.
