Silly question........computer related.

So, my new computer is here........YEH! But, I can't just set it up, and expect to be able to get on-line with it, can I? Do I have to have my internet provider do anything to it? I just don't want to go taking this old one all down until I know I can get on-line with the new one. I don't like to miss my customer e-mails, and I won't be able to do anything with it until tuesday morning otherwise. I do have a dsl modem if that means anything.

Re: Silly question........computer related.

I assume you are running Vista on the new computer, unless you paid extra for XP.
Are you using a router in addition to the DSL modem? If so, is it wireless?

When you turn on your brand new computer, it will run you through the set up process. This includes setting up internet. The computers do pretty much everything for you nowdays, unlike the old days.

If you are using a cable to attach to the modem, you can unplug one computer and plug in the other one at any time.

Getting on to the internet should work automatically. But...email depends on what you're using to view it. If it's Outlook (Vista has changed the name to WindowsMail) then there is set up you'll need to do; add email accounts, server names, contacts etc. If you're using a web based email then nothing changes. You'll also need to do some work to import bookmarks.

Re: Silly question........computer related.

I definately paid extra for the XP, I just don't trust that I would be satisfied with Vista, after hearing so many bad things about it. And I know when I ordered the computer, they asked if I was using Outlook.

Now that I think about it, when I moved here fall of 2007, all I had to do was set up the compter, and everything ran as it should. Maybe I'll just go ahead and set it up.

That's the way to think! (although I would be scared to death! )

You can export your outlook settings on your old computer. Save them to a usb stick or something to transfer them to your new computer. Then go into outlook on your new computer and import your accounts. No other settings to play with then. It should even import your passwords I think.

Go for it, Geri! Most new computers come with phone tech-support these days, just in case you get stuck. Do you use a router for your home computer network? If you do, plug an ethernet cable from your computer into an open port on the router, and off you go.

...you know...she posted that about 12 hours ago.
Do you think the computer is holding her hostage? Should we organize a rescue mission?

Geri is only a few hours north from where we are, Heidi. Hmm, I hope she posts back soon...

I know, John. But she's got.... She's... got... [whispers] snow. [/whispers] *shudder*
Can we wait until spring? Maybe she'll get her computer whacked out before then?
