G20 meeting

Getting to work this week might be 'interesting' due to a number of protests that will go on as the G20 meeting takes place.

I think I should be alright ... but we had an email come around today saying that we are on 'orange' alert for the rest of the week.

Re: G20 meeting

Well, hopefully it wont get bad where I am. I hardly think protesters are going to be interested in storming a dusty old university.

Glad I got my bike though as I imagine there will be disruption on the tube and bus network today.

I hope your weather there stays good enough to ride your bike.

Re: G20 meeting

Yeh they seem to have taken loads of precautions so hopefully nothing too terrible will happen...

Still lots of people in our London office are working from home or "dressing down" (tho not sure how well the chinos, polo shirt and deck shoes look will blend in...).

When G8 was in Edinburgh a few years back a few of us were out of the office on exam training (so were in jeans etc anyway) and we headed back to town and got totally caught up in it (even got driven back by horses....v dramatic!). Loads of drama on George Street (main business street in Edinburgh where most of the nasty multinationals have offices....)

Anyway...look after yourself - here's hoping that it passes without too much violence and that we come out of it with some good global actions

Re: G20 meeting

I'm told that the London tube bombings were linked with the G8 meeting in Edinburgh. Whether that is true or not I have no idea.

There are concerns that terrorists will take advantage of the situation and try something but who knows.

Recent pics from the BBC website. I have a general dislike and distrust for the police (the police in London are very oppressive and intimidating in my experience) but I have to say, they got a heck of a job on today. Looks pretty scary!

I can't imagine being a police officer surrounded by that lot!

I'm not so convinced the protests will be peaceful (pic above shows a few shuffles!) but I hope so. No matter what their messages are, any show of violence from the protesters will immediately invalidate them in my view. Theres no excuse for that. And certainly no excuse to intimidate a group of people to such an extent that they are afraid to wear suits to work.

Weather is nice though ... excellent for bike riding

Re: G20 meeting

Turned out not to be so bad. There was violence, but not as bad as it could have been. The police managed to contain the situation very well. Only 32 arrests out of 5000 protesters.
