Bedbugs

Apparently, bedbugs are making a comeback. A downtown apartment building is overrun with em. But as long as you have clean bedding, there's no problem, right? From what I've heard, they're the NASTIEST,MOST DISGUSTING household insect you can get. They get in your matress -and suck your blood!

Re: Bedbugs

Em...I have some bad news! That's not really how they work. They live in the wood work (ie bed frame) as well as in the mattress seams etc. They pass along quite easily (commonly through their eggs getting on sleeping bags etc in hostels and then getting taken home) so whilst making sure you wash stuff when you get back from being away should help I don't think it's gauranteed to keep them away.

I had them in a flat I lived in at uni (they were there when I moved in!). Horrid horrid horrid - still get nightmares about them now (6 years later....!)

Re: Bedbugs

Lilyb is right, bedbugs are really terrible and not at all easy to get rid of! I have been reading about them a lot here in the States since they are making a resurgence. (Honestly, it makes me not want to travel! Or at least, double and triple check online reviews of every hotel or motel before my family takes a chance! I think I read too much.... )

DDT and other heavy duty pesticides made them almost disappear some decades ago, but now, with those chemicals are outlawed (for good reason) and with the increase in international travel esp to and from areas where they are common, bedbugs are appearing in big cities, college dorms, fancy schmancy hotels, etc!!!

You have to wash everything you own in super hot water, bag up everything else in plastic or throw it out (mattresses, furniture, etc. etc.), vacuum like a maniac and do this over and over while the new eggs hatch in cycles. Total nightmare. They hop into suitcases, spread through hotel and institutional laundries. They numb the skin when they bite, so people sleep through and then wake up covered in mysterious itchy spots...

Re: Bedbugs

I was thinking: What? No! That's just a colloquial saying: "Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite!" I didn't realize they were making a comeback and becoming a real nightmare!

Re: Bedbugs

As the daughter of the Orkin Man (branch manager for almost 15 years)--I can tell you they are everywhere and horrible.

Movie theaters, hotels, peoples homes/apartments--and no they aren't just in beds. You'll find them in couches, chairs, any surface really.

Re: Bedbugs

I knew I saw something about a bedbug conference!

Quote:
Faced with rising numbers of complaints to city information lines and increasingly frustrated landlords, hotel chains and housing authorities, the Environmental Protection Agency hosted its first-ever bedbug summit Tuesday.

Organized by one of the agency's advisory committees, the two-day conference drew about 300 participants to a hotel in Arlington.
