What is Malware?

What is it, and should I be running something more than my anti-virus software? I'm using AVG Antivirus and Antispyware software.......(not the free addition). Below is what they say I am covered for.

Anti-Virus: protection against viruses, worms and trojans
Anti-Spyware: protection against spyware, adware and identity-theft
Anti-Rootkit: protection against hidden threats (rootkits)
Web Shield & LinkScanner: protection against malicious websites

Re: What is Malware?

Malware, or Malwarebytes?, is what an IT person advised me to load and scan my computer with before that April 1st thing that was out there in the interwebz. She liked Malware because it was a good, comprehensive program and it was free to download.
I am not computer literate and I usually have the husband do whatever needs to be done with the computer. We use McAfee(sp?) or Norton, I can't remember which.

Re: What is Malware?

Malwarebytes removed a virus I had that got by Norton. It's great! There is a free download, but I think that's limited. I assume you have to pay for the whole system, as you do for Norton, but it's so much better IMO.

Re: What is Malware?

When I finally got my computer fixed by going to an IT business in town last month, they told me it was the spyware I had in my computer that was messing it up more and more. They removed it and gave me the free AVG & Maleware.

Re: What is Malware?

Malwarebytes is a virus killing program. Malware is a virus. I'm not familiar with AVG. Sorry.

Re: What is Malware?

I think malware is a general term for any kind of harmful program that gets put on your computer without your permission. From viruses that mess up the computer, to adware that directs your browser to an unwanted website or puts unwanted ad banners up in your browser. It all falls under the heading "malware".
But it sounds like you're covered, Geri.
