Children's Beauty Pageants

I watch them for the same reason I watch Judge Judy, to get outraged!

Thousands of dollars are spent on dresses, hair pieces, costumes, flipper, (false teeth that cover flaws) makeup, and tanning to make five year olds look like ladies of the evening!

The parents insist their child LOVES pageants and that they increase the child's self esteem, while some of the children are crying or bragging:

I want to go home!
I'm so tired. ( and mother gives them sugary candy to keep them alert)
I didn't win the big crown! (stomping feet)
Everyone's prettier than me.
I'm a diva, because I'm so beautiful.

The dads sometimes remark that the child's college education has been spent of thousand dollar dresses... That's sad.

Sometimes there's a $500 prize. (which doesn't cover half of what has been spent!)

This child is between 5 and 8 years old:

No child should look that adult imo.

Let them be children.

I agree; let them be kids! They will be 'grown up' soon enough, with all of the heavy responsibilities that come with age and independence ... they will *never* feel as loved and safe and carefree as they do at this age ... let them enjoy it.
I cannot believe with comments like this:
I want to go home!
I'm so tired. ( and mother gives them sugary candy to keep them alert)
I didn't win the big crown! (stomping feet)
Everyone's prettier than me.
I'm a diva, because I'm so beautiful.

...that they are either enjoying it OR learning anything 'good' from it other than learning how to be self-centered. Maybe juvenile pageants shouldn't start until they are at least into the "teen" years. (Grrr!) But, I understand there are plenty of child pageants that *do* cater to and prefer the natural look that preserves their innocent age and their innate beauty at that time of their lives. I would think those types of pageants teach more about how to be a better person than who-can-look-more-glittery-and-going-on-30.

Child pageants are disgusting and should be outlawed. I just don't get it, these parents are clearly exploiting their children! And they way they make them look? They are SEXUALIZING a CHILD! And we wonder why we have so many pedophiles preying on children in this country! We make it SO EASY! I'm with you Jeanie, those programs make me SO MAD!

Rachael, you read my mind. I would imagine the pageants attract a number of pedophiles. That makes me sick.

That picture has been pretty severely edited. I have the program that does it... After some experience with it, the kinds of work it does are pretty obvious. Her face may not even be that shape.

I do agree that child pageants are pretty dumb. And definitely bad for the kids.

One of my close friends got to produce one of the "toddlers & tiaras" episodes- she was horrified to say the least...

Even if the picture is edited, most of the girls look like that. It's creepy. I can't even watch the show anymore. The parents are horrendous and the children have egos the size of trucks and are shameless little brats. The last straw for me was when a couple had three children in pageants, one boy and two girls. The mother obviously favored one daughter over the other, and when her favorite lost and the other (nice, timid) daughter won, she was brutal. That was it for me.

I think pagents are the biggest "legimate" exploitation of children around and should be banned.
