"It Gets Better"

For those of you who don't know, columnist Dan Savage has launched a campaign he's called "It Gets Better". People from all walks of life are taking the opportunity to reach out to gay teens, imploring them to not give up, reassuring them that things will get better.

44 - 'It Gets Better': Dan Savage's anti-bullying campaign for gay teens

I love it, and I love the video below, a speech made by a Fort Worth City Councilman who happens to be openly gay. It's a beautiful, brave speech for a politician to make. I can admit it... I cried.

Hang in there, kids. We're here for you. And it does get better.

There is far too much bullying; there's no doubt. But there are people who understand, and they will accept people as they are. It's so easy for me to say, I know, but it's important for young people to concentrate on their innate gifts, and develop them. It's difficult to ignore the bullying, but life is precious, and yes, it does get better.

I would hope in the 21st century it DOES, but even now people are so bigoted against homosexuals.

A couple I know have been openly told by their neighbours that they shouldn't be allowed to live together. Their neighbours aren't religious freaks, or oldies stuck in the 1920s, but parents in their 30s. It's pathetic. They're actually scared that their children are going to be "turned".

Then there's people who openly refuse to allow gay couples to stay in their hotels or whatever. These people need educating, or at last a good slap.

It SHOULD get better, but it doesn't always.

I have several gay friends who say that it has gotten better for them as they have gotten older. Even Ellen did a speak out on her show saying that it gets better.

Unfortunately, it would be alot easier for the teenagers now if their parents had different attitudes instead of the ones described by Hugh.

I personally want to say that I am here to support you. My best friend is gay and a female impersonator. I love going to his shows and see all sorts of people in the audience having a good time. I especially love the shows where he is hired by older women for their husband's birthday, especially when "Marilyn Monroe" comes on stage. Diversity is good for all of us.

But it does. People may always be jerks, but life gets better, and they need to stick around to see it. That's the point of the campaign. That's the point of the videos, and the movement taking off now. Gay kids are hanging themselves and shooting themselves, unable to take it any longer. They need to know that it gets better.

I see what you mean now, yeah. I think anyone who is different finds that life one the whole gets easier. To be confused about one's own sexuality must make it 100 times worse.

I wish every gay teen could watch that video. What a wonderful courageous man.

I'm so amazed and proud that this came from Texas, probably the most conservative state in the US (next to maybe Arizona)

I don't care how you feel about homosexualty, NOBODY has should make ANYONE feel like they don't have the right to live, let alone a child. Those kids blood is on the hands of the children who bullied them, the parents that taught those kids to bully, and the school officials who did nothing to stop it.

My best friend in high school was gay and I remember vividly the bullying and cruelty he went through. To think that the same thing is happening 25 years later breaks my heart.
