I grew up in a military family and know first hand the sacrifices our men and women make by serving.

I'm at work today, too. grrrr

Great drive, though - no traffic!

I'm working today. I only get 6 set holidays a year, I get 6 more that I can use whenever I want! This is on top of my normal va-ca time.

Thanks to all our armed forces, including my brother who has given up the last 3 Thanksgivings and Christmases with family to serve our country in the USMC. *OORAH*

We big time treated my brother-in-law as a welcome back and Veteran's day combo platter, heh!

He just got back from Afghanistan. Lost one of his good friends from West Point last month too, and I can only imagine how rough the conditions must be, so nothing is too good for these guys. Many many thanks for your service!!!

I'm not one for sentimental poems, but this always gives me a lump in my throat.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place: and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
WE SHALL NOT SLEEP,
THOUGH POPPIES GROW
IN FLANDERS FIELDS.
John McCrae.

The day before he wrote "In Flanders Fields", one of John's closest friends was killed and buried in a grave decorated with only a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were already blooming between the crosses that marked the graves of those who were killed in battle.

Unable to help his friend or other fallen soldiers, John McCrae gave them a voice through "In Flanders Field."

Lest we forget.....

What a lovely tribute to his friend.

My brother is still here and serving in the USMC but I still get a lump in my throat ever time I see a commercial for the Marine Corp.
