Grammar help!

Grammar help!

I'm writing an article, and usually I don't have much trouble...but Word just keeps telling me to fix once sentence! Their fixes make no sense, though!

My sentence: For example, a $1,000 deductible must be met before the insurance company pays for a hospital visit. Or a $250 deductible used before prescription medications are paid for by insurance.

Word says I should have "Or a $250 deductible used before prescription medications is paid for by insurance"
or
"Or $250 deductibles used before prescription medications are paid for by insurance."

The first one doesn't make any sense, because "medications is" is wrong (or at least I think so!), and should be "medications ARE"
The second one is wrong, because "Or $250 deductibles used" is wrong because it should not be plural... right?

Feh! I hate English!
Or maybe I just hate this job... haven't decided which yet LOL

I just tried using a comma, which Word seemed to approve of. Still looks wrong to me though...

Or $250 deductibles used before prescription medications are paid for, by insurance.

I think the comma is wrong because ....well, it just seems wrong. SIGH!

"Deductible" is the subject of your sentence the way you wrote it, so it would be "is."

The problem is that "Or a $250 deductible used before prescription medications are paid for by insurance" is not a full sentence.

Try: "Alternatively, a $250 deductible must be met before prescription medications are paid for by insurance."

Also, wouldn't it be "And" rather than "Or?" You have to meet each deductible individually right?

In your sentence you say: .... a $250 deductible.....
This is singular so your verb should be "is", not "are".

Susan - Yeah, that could work. I was trying to avoid using "must be met" twice so close together.

swimkris - Ohhh, the 'and' works.

Thanks guys!
