Shipping your cat off the mainland?

Has anybody had to do this?

I am going to Oahu with a limited amount of cash, a family member who lives there and the promise of potential work

Nothing is tying me down - well my cat but that is in a good way

If I can manage to establish myself I obviously would love to have him shipped over.

Has anybody had to go through this entire process?

I have no experience with shipping, but I believe your cat will be quarantined for 120 days.

I've never done this, but there are plenty of services out there.

This one flys to Oahu. Pet Air Welcomes You To Flypets.com

I just did a quick search of "pet shipping" in Google.

I did many years ago. Go to
Hawaii Rabies Quarantine Information Brochure
File Format: PDF/Adobe Acrobat - Quick View
It is STRONGLY recommended that owners of pets residing in Hawaii ..... that would result in quarantine of your pet before you arrive in Hawaii. ...
hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/aqsbrochure.pdf
This will give you all the info you should need.

When you shipped how was your animal?

The cost and wait time is not a primary concern, as this would only occur if and only if I was sure I was going to be staying in HI, right now its a 2 month vacation while I look for work. I know so many out there would discourage me from going but I do not care. Its my right to live where I want to live and go where I want to go, and well this is what I want to do.

Years ago we did ship our 10mo old Lhasa mix to Hawaii in prep for a 3 year tour. I was glad we shipped her ahead; as any animal is automatically transferred to the Quarrintine Center, directly off the plane, with no contact by owner anyway. So at least she did not have to go thru the trauma at home of packing & moving. There were visiting hours each day when you could see the animal, and each one had a decent indoor/outdoor area of its own. I would assume it would be similar for a cat. In fact, when we arrived, they had "roomed" her right next door to another Lhasa. (She really looked like one, so I think they did it as some kind of kindness). I thought that was sweet. What I did not think was sweet was traveling each day, at the children's urging, from Mililani Town, near Wheeler AFB, down H-1, which all highways feed into, with traffic at a standstill at rush hour after the kids were out of school for the day. If your time frame is different it may not be as bad. But the Quarrintine itself was as good as it could be, given what it was.

Years ago the pet had to go to the Quarrintine Center for 120 days. You could visit. They changed it so the pet could be on the mainland in home quarrintine for 90 days and 30 days at the Quarrintine Center in Hawaii. Now if done properly all 120 days can be in home on the mainland and you pick up the animal after they do a check.
My Molly girl was quarrintined on the Big Island for 30 days. I visited a few times but hated to hear her cry when I left. They said she did OK when I wasn't there. When I finally took her home I got stink eye but she was so busy checking out her new home she forgot to be made at me.
Are you coming from the West Coast. If so make sure your baby is on a direct flight and everything should be OK.
