Odd personal successes

Everyone concerns themselves with how to get ahead in life, how to make a name, and at 25 the whole concept has always been a mystery to me. But I suddenly had a bunch of successes this week and then a realization from them--it's doing things for free! I just checked my workplace's website and realized that the photography I do for fun is plastered all over it, along with small plant descriptions I've written. I offered to make a large print of a stunning photo I took (it's the photo circumstances that are stunning, not my ability), to give to my boss because I knew she'd love it, and realized...some real head honchos would see it in her office, more than likely, and could ask who the photographer is. I swear that's not why I offered! Yesterday I approached a really sweet woman who owns a business by my house and offered her some of the plants I can't transplant when I leave my house, because she really deserves more attention from the people who frequent her business, and then realized people could very well ask her who did the gardening (it's a busy place) because the flowers are very unusual. Wow. It's not like I'm forcing my stuff off on people, they really love what I offer, it's genuine offering, but suddenly I realize the stuff I offer will be seen everywhere, by lots of people. I feel weird and pretentious.

Funny, "weird and pretentious."

I got a similar feeling about giving stuff away when I joined my local Freecycle group. I'm the opposite of whatever a hoarder is and am always looking for something to give away. In the last couple months I've given away a stereo system, a nice framed print, a TV, and many other things.

And here's the coup de gras.....I had a 40-year running collection of presidential campaign buttons. I realized I could part with them, and that they're not really worth much. I offered them to the Newseum, a huge museum about the news and current events here in DC, and they accepted them! How great is that?

Hey, that's really cool! How fun! How did they respond when they saw them? How neat of a thing to have & do

Well, they do say that in order to 'get ahead' sometimes you need to take a couple of steps backwards. For example for career, you volunteer where you can network and develop your career or do extra-curricular stuff at work and the big bosses take notice.

It's kinda like a by-product. What am I trying to say? I mean like when you do nice things, the general pay back is ..it's all good. Even if nothing concrete happens, you feel good inside and that's the reward. Am I making any sense? I'm feeling a bit wonky today.

You seem to feel 'weird and pretentious' more because you thought about possible gain from your actions than because of giving things away in the first place? It's true that lots of people do that kind of thing as a kind of social networking tactic, but you can do it just because you feel like it too! Feeling good about doing something can be its own reward regardless of other opportunities. Do you suspect your own motives - or are you starting to care a little more about success? Can happen as you get older.

The best things in life are free!

If you believe in Karma, you're getting points for that! If you believe in Heaven, you're getting points towards that! And if you don't believe in all that "other life junk", well...at least you're still being a good person anyway!

I love FreeCycle. Lately I've been taking more than I give, but this summer I NEED to clean out my storage shed... and honestly, if I haven't used that stuff in the last 3 years, I probably won't ever need it. So I'll have TONS of stuff to post. Granted, I could try to do a yard sale, or E-bay, but...eh, that's too much work. As it is, gonna be work to just put up a little text description, without taking pictures and doing shipping and packaging and all that junk.

I have always believed that what goes around comes around and not always just the bad stuff. I feel that if I do something nice for someone, they might be more inclined to do something nice for someone else in return and the whole cycle just keeps going. It makes your home/workplace/neighborhood (etc.) a better place to be. You don't need to feel 'weird and pretentious', just smile knowing that you have been kind to another human being.

TQ you aren't trying to get ahead, you are being a good person. There is a real difference, trust me. If something good happens out of what you have done, then great, but it is not the reason you did it in the first place.

Kudos to you on having all of your photos on the website. Can you share the link?

Thanks everyone The 'success' isn't going to my head---there's no real success yet, just the realization that my stuff is out there...and definitely there aren't any motives involved

I don't have all my photos on a website (I take zillions of photos), but some favorites are uploaded at Flickr: silky_fleur's Photostream. There's a lot of Jessie And my husband-and-me outings.
