Anyone have any experience with Pressure Equalization Tube?

in the ear.

I'd ask elsewhere but the rest of the internet is closed today.

My ears been plugged up since early december.

Are there any negatives? Specialists never seem to mention negatives. Will I be able to swim again?

What a coincidence, Dave...my ears have been plugged since early December, too. The doctor examined my ears and said that there's nothing physically wrong with them (no redness, swelling of the eardrum, puss/fluid, etc.), but he's stumped. I did have a cough, so he prescribed some pills for me to take for a week, then I go back for a follow-up on Monday to see if they helped. I'm not so sure if they've helped. I mean, my hearing is slightly better, but my ears are still plugged up. The next step is a hearing test, though I don't know what good that's gonna do.

Sorry, I don't know anything about pressure equalization tubes, though. Good luck on your search for information.

I had a brutal cold in Nov and early Dec that they game me steroids to clear up.

I've had ear problems before but I went to a specialist (ENT) and did the hearing test and a pressure test so that they could confirm "Yes, your ear is plugged up". The official diagnosis is "eustachian tube dysfunction'. No infection, just unequal pressure between the outside world and my inner ear. It's common in little kids.

There are two solutions. The first is to wait but my Google tells me it can take months to clear up. The second is the insertion of Pressure Equalization Tubes. The Doc said "come back i a few weeks if it hasn't cleared up and we'll put in a tube". I'm pretty sick of not hearing so a tube seems promising.

It's a pretty common approach in little kids because they have short eustacian tubes but I want to know what the drawback are. Also, does it hurt? Okay, I know it hurts but how much does it hurt?

Bueller? Bueller?

I think my hearing test will be administered by an ENT. And as I kid, I had ear infections almost every other week, so I'm actually kind of surprised that I haven't had issues with my ears sooner. And like you, I also had a brutal cold around the same time you did. But with me, it seemed like my ears plugged up, suddenly, right before Christmas. Not fun, not fun at all.

I'm pretty sure children who have tubes put into their ears can still swim after the ears heal. I can't imagine why you couldn't swim at least with ear plugs. Funny about all this ear business, a little over 2 weeks ago, I was feeling a bit under the weather, low grade fever, nausea. I had post nasal drip since early september, but assumed it was allergies with all the wet and mold we had here during the fall months. I was diagnosed with a pretty nasty double ear infection, I had no idea my ears were in bad shape, and also a sinus infection on top of it. Fist time I've had an ear infection since I was about 6 years old.
