Prayers for my dad! :(

My elderly father is balancing on the edge! I know prayers would help, even though my dad is a fierce skeptic and a total curmudgeon!

A prescription of "Levaquin" a very strong fluoroquinolone antibiotic in too-high a dosage for him has given him fluoride poisoning. He's 82, diabetic and has limited kidney function, but his mind has been sharp as tack up until this happened - he's a retired professor, avid reader, genealogist who just published a 600+ page family history etc. etc. Now he is lost in a fog with nerve damage, de-personalized, can't speak or stand up - he's terribly terribly poisoned.

None of his many doctors we called after the prescription came in gave us accurate warnings or even knew of the dangers. I knew it was dangerous, but by the time I found the manufacturer's specification sheet with explicit dosing and warnings for kidney patients, he had already taken four days at what was a toxic dosage. Ten days later the effects have shown up. He can only say single words but he's adamant about not wanting to go to the hospital ("NO! NO! NO!") but also says "NO!" when we ask if he wants to die. My mother is a mess.

We have found the only doctor in town who can help - dual degrees in medicine and holistic care who does detoxes of this sort, so there is some hope. We're trying to get someone to come to the house for an IV of fluids until we can get more help. High doses of calcium, magnesium and vitamin C should help flush the toxins out of him...

I'm so sorry your family is going through this, Fran. I hope the detox works.

Sorry to hear about your dad. Can't do the prayers, but here's my wishes for his recovery. I'm pushing 82 myself and my one big worry is the doctors and their lack of ability to prescribe for patients properly. Everything is down in the book and that's what they go by. Of course, if they don't even check the book????

Oh my.. that is so frightening. I can't do the prayers either, but I can hope with every bit of hope I have that he recovers and regains those abilities of his that have been damaged. Biggest hugs to you and yours.. wishing for the best.

Good thoughts and prayers for your dad, and for you and your Mom. What a horrible position you all are in right now. I hope that the detox brings your dad back to you.

Fran I am appalled that your dad was treated so badly by his doctor. In the long run you might do the world a service by trying to get his license revoked, as well as a malpractice suit at the same time to get him one way, or another.
