Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Hey everyone,
So when 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' was coming to theaters I heard such great things that I went to the library and read the whole trilogy. I didn't finish in time to catch it in the theater but it was at the Redbox last weekend and I FINALLY got to see it. I was curious if there was anyone else who read the book and saw the movie and what your opinions are? Personally, I thought it pared down enough of the content to still make it cohesive but I don't know that I would have understood Lisbeth's character and situation enough without reading the book. I also thought the book moved a little slow so the content choices were a good compromise. What does anyone else think about the book/movie/book and movie?
Thanks!
Julz

I never read any of the books, but I have seen the first movie in Swedish and then much later in English. Enough time passed between viewing the two that I wasn't comparing them, however I felt in the English version the female character came across more strongly. There's always going to be stuff lost in translation, both from book to screen and from Swedish to English... but I enjoyed both versions for what they were and didn't find myself confused. One thing that slightly detracted from the Swedish version of the movie was that the subtitles were fairly small and the language was incredibly foreign sounding (distracting at times) - I'm used to hearing Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German... but Swedish, nope... can't say I'd ever heard it before.

I only read the first book and saw the movie last Dec. I thought the movie was so much better! There was a lot of detail in the book that just seemed to drag on - I almost quit reading a couple of times. Especially in the beginning - I kept thinking "so why does everyone think this is such a good book?"

Usually I feel the books are better than the movies but not in this case. In fact I wasn't too interested in seeing the movie, but I was going with family & they wanted to see it.

The books were excellent on the whole. Yes, there were sections that could have done with a bit more editing, overall they were great I thought. Lisbeth is a fabulously strong, but vunerable character.
Films always remove large chunks of the plot and character development for timing sake, but the Swedish films had enough detail to really bring things to life. The grim bits weren't glorified, or tarnished over.

Haven't seen the Americanised version. I don't know if I will. I've heard more negative things about them than positive.

I'm shocked

The last time people tried to elimate free roaming cats it resulted in The Black Plague.

Read all 3 books, saw all 3 movies in Swedish (hubby is Swedish so I got his translation as well) and saw the American movie. Liked all of them, and I agree, the books dragged on and were tedious in parts, but I couldn't put them down. I think all the movies were good, but its hard for me to say if I hadn't read the books if I'd have gotten it all.

I think the books and the movies were great complements to one another. The book gives you much of the information and detail that you need to understand the nuances of the movie. I really would love nothing more than to see the Swedish versions but it's hard to enjoy the movie and the acting while reading the subtitles through the whole thing (like 'inglorious basterds').
