Healthy cold drinks in summer

Technically it's not summer, but we HVE been dealing with some hi temps.

What's the best, safest way to hydrate? Sports drinks? Flavored water? Bottled water? I suppose soda's COMPLETELY out of the question.

Trick to cool a room:point the fan OUTSIDE. It will circulate the air and keep things surprisingly cool!
OT I've temporalily switched from ice cream to fro yo. Tasty and healthy.

Blinds are useful as well. When I leave for work I tilt the blinds on the morning sun side of the apartment so it doesn't heat it up. Then when I get home I tilt the afternoon sun side so it doesn't shine in that side.

I quite enjoy cucumber water. A few slices of fresh cucumber in a glass of water.

Soda is definitely out. It will just make you more thirsty. I don't drink sports drinks because often they are PACKED with sugar. Same with vitamin water and flavored water. Sugar substitutes often effect your blood sugar exactly the way real sugar does so even though "diet" drinks are calorie free they aren't that great for you.

Water with natural flavoring is your best natural choice. A slice of lemon, lime or cucumber is always great in water.

Generally, I drink beer and run the AC. This keeps me quiet, and the house cool.

I throw a few tablespoons of chai tea into a big pitcher of (skim) milk for the fridge. Pour it through a tea strainer and into a glass. Yum.

And cold coffee. Sometimes I forget to make ice and so I just wait until the morning cuppa cools off on its own. This is not recommended, but it gets the job done.

Shake recipes

Well, since I'm on the opposite kind of diet as everybody else... MILK!
I do like fruit juice ever so often (Wal-Mart's Great Value apple punch is yummy). However, if you look at the unit price, the juice is more than twice as much as milk. That's okay, it also has slightly less calories than milk. Overall, milk wins.

I just downloaded a diet app on my phone, and I'm gonna REALLY try to stick to my diet this time...really! My goal is to be no less than 90 lbs by Christmas.
I've been thinking up recipes for shakes.

PB-banana-chocolate
2 tablespoons peanut butter
banana
yogurt (greek?)
2 tablespoons chocolate ice cream syrup
1 packet Carnation Instant Breakfast (either chocolate or vanilla flavor)
3 tablespoons dry milk powder
no less than 8 ounces whole milk - more depending on how much it takes to get a good "shake" texture.
I figure that's about 820 calories. It'll probably make at least 4 cups, so I'd have to drink just a little bit at a time with meals.

I am going to think up fruit versions too, with vanilla yogurt, strawberry Carnation stuff, real berries and/or melon chunks mixed in, etc.

I wonder how avocado would taste in that? I hope good, because that's a great source of healthy fat!
I also just tried out the "grinding into powder" feature on my Magic Bullet, so could add wheat germ and oatmeal flour to shakes too for extra calories, fiber and protein!

....*stops rambling excitedly now*

I really like lemon squeezed into iced water. You can also add some mint.

The healthiest drink in the world is plain water. If you are going to flavor it, use a natural flavor like lemon or mint or cucumber. When it is really hot, I drink nonalcoholic beer. The objective is to not get a buzz, but to replace electrolytes on really hot days; beer is great for that purpose. Get a low calorie nonalcoholic and you have the best of all worlds. Plus I love the taste of beer.

Baileys.

Better yet? Baileys with a hint of Caramel.

Won't cool you down, but if you drink enough, you just won't care.

I must say, Vivid's shake sounds pretty good, too!

I like your suggestion, marie73. At least once or twice a summer...
