Fave LOTR movie

The Desolation Of Smaug really takes you into Middle Earth. There's action, humor, and you get to know the characters. The story is first rate. You have the QUEST, but there's a story UNDERLYING the quest, and you get to see where Gandalf goes when he 'wanders off'.

Of course, the 1971 version of The Hobbit has a place in my heart...

FOTR - the one that started it all

Although the production quality remains top notch, The Hobbit "trilogy" doesn't have the same emotional impact, IMO.

Was not a huge fan of the whole hobbit series. I know WHY they split it into three movies, but honestly, if they would have stuck to the plot in the book and kept it to a single movie I think i would have enjoyed it a lot more. Admittedly I haven't seen the most recent one, but the first two were just ... ugh. I don't appreciate filler in my films, and poor editing is a major pet peeve of mine with movies in general (I fancy myself an amateur critic ). I appreciate the need to adjust/adapt/incorporate new stuff, especially since the tone of the Hobbit doesn't match that of LOTR, but man did they overdo it. I remember watching the first movie just wondering how much longer we'd have to wait for them to start on their **** quest!

As for the LOTR movies proper, I think Two Towers is the best. Watch that Helm's Deep sequence again if you get a chance. That is one of the most intense, no-holds-barred, rollercoaster rides of any action sequence I have ever seen, and it deserves to be commended as such! The conclusion(s?) of Return of the King, and the Shire and Moria bits in Fellowship were also highlights for me

The CGI is good but I really wish they'd have not animated the Orcs in favor of using masks/prosthetics like they did in the original trilogy. It's a small thing, but it really made the picture look that much more realistic. The brain is extremely adept at picking out what is ~right~ and ~wrong~ with an image (the uncanny valley effect) and I felt all of the orcs in the new trilogy suffered from this.

Sorry for the triple post, won't do it again, just a huge fan of the series

I have yet to see Battle of the Five Armies, but as of right now I'm really torn.... I love the original trilogy, but I was super impressed with Unexpected Journey. It didn't feel like a three hour movie, the story was just phenomenal.

My ignorance is totally showing. I had no idea what LOTR meant then when I clicked on it, I realized they were movies and had never heard of any of them. <<<Hangs head in shame>>>

Don't worry, Marcia, I don't think your cats think any less of you because of it
