Diphenhydramine vs. Doxylamine

Diphenhydramine and doxylamine are two antihistamines contained in numerous over-the-counter single and combination products as both sleep aids and as cold/allergy remedies(probably the best-known products are Benadryl(diphenhydramine alone) and NyQuil(doxylamine with several other drugs)). Which do you think is better? I prefer diphenhydramine since I find the sedation caused by doxylmine more annoying. Doxylamine also lasts longer so the residual effects are felt longer the next day when it is used as a sleep aid.

Neither. I'd say overall diphenhydramine (Benadryl) makes me feel worse, however, I try to avoid H1 antagonists.

Doxylamine is said to have a 9 hour half-life, however, diphenhydramine can range from 4 to 8 hours depending on the individual.

Chemistry wise, they are both similar as well.

Interesting side note, doxepin (Sinequan) is 800 times more potent than diphenhydramine, and at 75 mg almost completely inhibits histamine release from some tissue stores.
