How to get rid of ants?

We are having major ant problems in our new apartment. We have tried both Combat and Raid ant baits which have killed some of the ants, but they are still around in big numbers. I have had good luck with Combat before but it just didn't work this time.
What else can I try? I don't want to have an exterminator come because it might be bad for the cats.

Burn the place down, it's the only way to be sure!

Just kidding of course. There are some industrial sprays that are safe for animals. We had to buy some for scorpions at my last place. It worked on all bugs and wasn't harmful to the cat at all. I just always made sure it was dry before I let her roam. She was our little scorpion hunter, but even though she couldn't get hurt by their sting, I didn't want one.

chalk works for ants, wherever the ants are coming from put a chalk line/circle around the area, aparently they won't cross over it.

We use ant traps, the little metal ones, and we hide them really well so the cats can't get into them. Good places are under window sills, under cabinets, and under furniture.

They are pretty much on top of counters, so we don't have a problem with the cats getting into the traps. The problem is that we don't really know where all they are coming in from....they are in multiple places. The ants keep dying but I know we aren't getting the whole colony because more keep coming.

We have an ant problem in the summer months here. It's only a few, but they end up in the cats food, or on the counters, and even in my bathroom! Very irritiating since I'm clean and can't figure out where they originate from. I end up spraying that industrial stuff all around the house, but I have to spray often. Now it's cold/winter, so I get a break.

If you ever find the solution, please share... I fought with ants for three years in the basement apartment I first lived in. I thought they were coming in from the windows, then from the door, then it seemed like everywhere. I never did solve the insect problem - at least until i moved to the 4th floor

Sorry I can't be of more help - hopefully someone had better success than I...

Good luck!

I think it may be tougher in an apartment. When I lived in a house I sprinkled some stuff around the base of the house. I can't seem to remember the name right now. When I lived in an apartment years ago I had a major ant problem I tried the traps and couldn't get rid of them. I finally called the complex and they had someone come out. They used some other kind of trap and the ants loved it. Got rid of them quick.
