Warm water (not really boiling, but very hot) with honey and lemon is great. The heat sort of numbs the soreness and the honey sooths it and the lemon makes the mucous membranes work to clense the throat.
I've been real lucky. Haven't had an actual sore throat for ages. Same with cold or flu. Last flu was around 12 years old and cold around 13 years ago! Did have strep around 19 years old, man what ****.
I recently read that cold things like ice cream, etc. can irritate a sore throat. Agree with the tea and honey, I go with that every time.
I also read that dairy products can increase congestion.
I'm sick now, too, what works best for me is the hot water w/honey and lemon. If that is not available (i.e. middle of the day while at work/school) it helps to hold room temp water in your throat without swallowing for awhile. So you take a sip, tip your head a little, and let the water sit on your throat tissue as long as you can before you have to swallow. (Part of the pain is the throat drying out, and this helps rehydrate the tissue.) And of course, drink lots of fluids! (Apple juice is too sweet for me when I'm sick, and citrus doesn't work at all (burns!), but I find grape juice to work well when you need a variance from the water.)
