I screwed up big time

Yesterday everything was going fine at work, I was room teching working with Dr. E (our small animals specialist) when we got a bird in with a large mass on his stomach. The woman who owned him said she had taken him to a vet before about it but it was smaller then and was told it was beniegn and to leave it. Well it grew a lot and the bird couldnt use one of its legs because of this. Dr. E wanted to remove it, so we went to run the usual blood tests we do before surgery. The bird was small so we only could get a very tiny amount of blood *just* enough to run the bloodwork. Dr. C helped restrain the bird while Dr. E took the blood.

The first vein was no good so Dr. E discarded the needle and we tried another vein, this one worked. Then Dr. E realised he had forgotten to coat the syringe with the anti-clotting agent so the tests could be run. Dr. C told me to run fast and grab the green topped vials from one of the labs drawers. Normally this would have been no problem, but as we were using special vials for the blood because it was a bird I wasn't sure which to grab, so I grabbed all the different green topped vials I could find.

I ran back and held them all out for Dr. E to take from me, figuring he knew which we needed. He grabbed one and filled it, just in time because the rest of the syringe had clotted. Thats when Dr. C noticed....I had grabbed the control vials for the blood spinner. VERY BAD. That meant the blood sample had been put in a vial with water in it, not anti-clotting liquid. The entire blood sample was useless. We would have to wait a week before we could get more blood. Needless to say Dr. C was NOT happy and told me so. She later apologised but I still feel awful. I know I am new and will make mistakes but I wanted to shrivel up and die at that moment. The poor bird! Now he wasn't going to get the surgery he needed for at least a week because of me.

Dr. E tried to deflect the blame from me saying it was his fault because he forgot to heperinize(sp?) the needle first, but it was clear I could have saved the day but instead I ruined it. Sigh.

Ah dont worry about it.
Things happen, and if you look at what happened what dod you do wrong?
You brought ALL the bottles you thought it could have been because you wernt sure and it was the vets fault for not looking at what they picked up.
Dont beat yourself up about it.

Yeah, don't feel too bad. Like Zalensia said, since you brought out ALL the bottles, it should have been pretty clear that you weren't sure which to use, and they should have looked at them closely. I was once assisting the vet while he was cleaning out a VERY ANGRY Rottie's ears. Myself and another tech were in charge of holding him down. This dog was P*****. ROYALLY. He was muzzled, but kept managing to get the muzzles off. He was also thrashing all over the place and peeing all over the table and just basically showing us that he thought his ears were just fine, thank you very much! Anyway, we had been wrestling this dog for about 15 minutesand FINALLY got a grip on him. The doctor was FINALLY able to get to his ears, when I SNEEZED....causing to lose my grip for a millionth of a second, which was long enough for the dog to wriggle out of our grasp and jump off the table, and make a break for it.......took us another 45 minutes to get his ears done. Obviously, it wasn't my fault, and my boss and evryone just laughed about it......but I felt like such an idiot.

Don't feel bad mistakes do happen. I would feel horrible too, but at least the bird can be looked at soon enough.
