Kitten on BB6 UK

"Kitten on Big Brother: Is it fair?
Last updated 27 July 2005

The RSCPA say they're extremely unhappy after last night's Big Brother when the housemates were given a kitten to play with.

The kitten was meant to be a reward for them after they completed a task. Here's the housemates reaction when the cat was introduced:

Makosi: "Oh, wah."

Craig: "Oh, it's really frightened."

Derek: "Of course it's frightened you stupid moron."

Craig: "Oh, has it wee'd on me?"

Anthony: "Sorry lads for the loss of man points for opting for the cat, like, but I'm sick of drinking booze."

Craig: (shouting) "Did you see us on the screen?"

Everyone: "Shhhhhhh"

The RSPCA say Big Brother have been irresponsible treating an animal like a toy. They say the animal was clearly frightened and it was irresponsible to subject it to so many new and loud people. They've written to Big Brother several times in the past warning about using animals in shows - the RSPCA say the worst case was last year when Big Brother planned to give each contestant their own dog.

Producers are quoted in the papers as saying they're happy the kitten did not suffer any distress."

What are your views? I watched the show and felt sorry for the poor wee thing. Think it was inappropriate and unnecessary to put a small kitten through this stress.

That is very sad! Poor little kitty.

How can they even suggest giving 'contestants' each a dog? That is as ludicrous as a non- or distant relative giving a young child a kitten or puppy as a gift without asking the child's parents! Some people don't want pets - are not good pet owners - are not prepared for a pet.

Did someone rescue the baby from this situation? It is horrible sensationalism, the way they are using it. I really hope they find it a loving and appropriate home.

Some tv programs will do just about anything for ratings and not give a darn about who or what is harmed in the process.

Since it wasn't mentioned in the aretcile, it was only in the house for 60 minutes. After the first 10 minutes of being nervous in the house, it was playing & chasing a string around the livingroom and seemed a very confident well socialised little cat.

Although I disagree with putting a kitten in there in the first place, I think the RSPCA are being OTT, especially considering their own treatment of animals. They leave animals in far worse conditions than the BB house for one hour.

I suspect the kitten probably belongs to a member of staff behind the scenes.

No, just once a year in the summer. I guess maybe they did start at the same time, but it didn't seem like it.

Our BB is annoying, but I watch simply for something to do. The last few years have been people who want to go into acting or similar people who aren't the "average joe". They always put people on who've been on other reality shows, so it's irritating to me. The first year was great. Free internet feed that showed almost everything, and the audience voted for who they wanted out. Now it's so controlled and the feed cost money, but they hardly show anything, the players nominate each other and vote, ect..
