Dentist Visit...Augh! *Update*

I went to the dentist yesterday...I am on an HMO plan so I just kind of picked one and went there. It was so awful...first off they told me the visit was just for them to look at my teeth...not for the cleaning or anything. That is really weird to me...I have always had both done at the same time. So I ended up having to go in again later that day to do the cleaning.
So I am not good with dentists...I hate going to them actually. Well they did Xrays and told me that I do have all my wisdom teeth. I had one come in 2 years ago but the other 3 are still in my gums. The dentist was looking at my teeth and telling the hygenist what to write down, like "overbite grade 1, plaque mild, etc" which I thought she should have been talking to me while she was doing this and that this was bad "bedside manner". Anyway I about hyperventilated when she started saying "get her a referral to have her wisdom teeth out, #30 is going to need a crown, put a watch on #19" ***?! I put on my sheet that I had a fear of dentists and here she is just acting like it is no big deal. She told me I need a crown on one tooth and maybe on another. They both have fillings and she said they were stressing the tooth and the tooth might break and also one tooth has some decay in it. She could not give me a satisfactory explanation for why I need my wisdom teeth out. She said herself the other 3 will probably not come down. She just said I might have pocketing and bone loss due to bacteria. But how will the bacteria even get on the tooth if the tooth isn't even past the gums at all?! I think that's shady.
I got my Xrays from them because I told them I want a second opinion. I was talking to my MIL and my grandpa in law who both have worked in dentistry (as a dental assistant and the other in dental research) and my MIL was telling me what to look for on the Xrays and based on what she said, I don't see anything that looks like decay. They also both said they don't think there is any reason to have my wisdom teeth out.
So to get to the point...I don't know what to do. I don't feel comfortable going to this dentist but I don't know who else to go to. How on earth do I know how a dentist will be until I go to them? It seems like most people at work do not have the HMO plan and no one can recommend anyone to me. I also thought about going to a specialist and seeing what they say. I just want an honest opinion of what I need done...I feel like these people were just trying to make money. Also...they are on a frontage road of a major highway so my husband said they will have higher rent than most places...which might make them want to do stuff just for the money.

Yup, they sound "shady" to me. Please go for a 2nd & 3rd opinion. Just pick two names out of your HMO referal book and just go. At least you have your MIL & grandpa inlaw to confer with afterwards.

I've had several bad experiences with dentists. One guy had a fireplace in his waiting room & he was pushy enough to call me at home to try & convince me to get gum work done by his periodontal buddies in Chicago (which is like 50 miles from where I live). The guy even made a comment about "how well dressed" I was. I could just about see the $ signs in his eyeballs spinning around and going ka-ching, ka-ching!!

Rely on your gut feeling & go elsewhere. Good luck.

Oh that's too bad.
I come from a family of dentists. If you need a referral in southern WI, I can help!!

My mom is also a peri-hygentist.
I don't think the dentist dictating to the assistant is very odd. They do that a lot, although knowing you have a fear of dentists should have changed her bedside manner a bit.
Put a watch on 19, just means to keep an eye on it.

I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth out when I was younger. There was no need to have them out, but mom wanted it done. They were all the way out though.

I did recently switch dentists here also. I had a crack in a filling and the dentist I was going to wanted to do a full crown replacement. He has one of those fancy machines in his office to make the crown, I don't think those are very good (1 uncle owns a dental lab, I did some summer work for him, the real people doing the work are MUCH better than the machine), anyway he wanted to charge me $700.
I asked around about another dentist. Found one that was recommended by my aunt (same dental family ). I like him much better. He agreed the tooth needed to be repaired, but just dug out the old filling and put in a new one. $70

I'd get a second opinion, around here they run adds for dentists that specialize in "fear" patients! You might want to find one of those in your area.

Just wanted to give an update...I ended up visiting my husband's grandfather's denist...he is not an HMO but I thought it would be worth the money to get a 2nd opinion. Well, he ended up telling me that I did NOT need a crown...I just need a filling. Whew! He said there is nothing wrong with the fillings I have now.
He also said he would wait until my wisdom teeth came down to remove them...they are very high up now and he said it would be a fairly traumatic procedure to get them out.
I am sooo relieved. He also basically told me that HMOs will try to get you to do things you don't need to make more money, since the insurance doesn't pay them enough. I have decided I will go back to this dentist to get him to do the filling...I just don't trust going to anyone on my HMO plan at this point and I know he will do a good job, so it's worth the extra money to me. Oh and he didn't even charge me any money for the office visit and 2nd opinion.
