Urgent bird care help needed!

My boyfriend is watching his brother's budgies while he is overseas. It's been going well for a few days but when he went out today one of the birds had attacked and seriously injured one of the other birds. The poor thing has lost it's upper beak and was pecked on the back of the head, one of his wings is gouged and most of his tail feathers have been pulled out. Needless to say my boyfriend is horrified and feeling so guilty. His brother called and said that sometimes the parent birds do attack the young (nice of him to warn about it now after the fact).

The bird is accepting baby food through a syringe and he's alone in a cage now. Does anyone have any advice about how to clean and treat the wounds? I don't know what he can do to keep the beak wound from getting infected since anything he would use to clean it would end up going down the birds throat. Should he try to find a way to cover that wound or would it just suffocate the bird? His brother says that the upper beak can grow back, that it's sort of like a finger nail in that regard but he didn't have much to say about how to take care of the bird in the meantime. Since he's eating I'm mostly worried about infection I guess.

It's just a horrible experience and my boyfriend is so upset. I don't know a thing about birds and I'm feeling pretty useless in this situation. The brother seems to think that there's not much a vet could do, that it's a waiting game now. I guess that's possible but it seems like a cop out to me.

Help anyone??

Get thee to a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. This is no time for home remedies.

Shortly after my first post the poor guy passed away. I think the trama of the attack was just more then he could handle, even though it intially looked like he was fighting to hang on. My boyfriend is in tears. He buried the bird and said a prayer for him hoping that he's in a better place where he will be whole and happy.
