Is carob really safe for dogs?

I've always heard that carob is safe for dogs. I'm aware of the amount and purity of chocolate that it actually takes to be harmful to dogs, but I'd still never risk it!
I'm thinking about getting thisfor my brother's dogs for Christmas and just want to double check that it's really safe.

I worked at a pet boutique for years and every holiday we got carob treats, usually in cookie form or something like a Hershey's kiss, but yogurt with carob. All the feedback I ever got was great - the dogs loved it, and the only one I ever knew that got sick was a maltese who went through 20 carob yogurt treats in one sitting (The owner was a sweet old lady who wanted to spoil her pup and over did it) Otherwise I had people asking for them year round and no complaints.
American Health Kennel (company that makes the treats you're thinking about) has a solid reputation with their treat line, we always carried the bark bars and their cat treats and customers loved them. I'd say go for it, but of course feed them in moderation.
