Anyone know how to clean a disposal????

My disposal stinks I have tried dumping bleach down it and cleaning it with boiling water. I've tried every cleaner I can possibly think of. Nothing has any lasting effect.

Any ideas?

I used to buy some little marble sized balls that were meant to clean and de-stink a garbage disposal. You put one in, ran the disposal, then some water, and the stink was gone. It lasted too. Think I can find them anymore? I can't even remember the name.

I don't seem to have a lot of trouble anymore. One reason, I think, is I grind my coffee grounds every day. Seems to keep in things clean.

I pour a bit of white vinegar down mine when it stinks and the smell goes away.

I've heard crushed ice will help clean it, but I don't know about the smell, that cleaning lady from the TV, queen of clean may be able to offer something if you search her sites, http://www.diynet.com, and her own web site, http://www.queenofclean.com

There is a product made especially for cleaning disposals, but I'm afraid I can't think of the name. You might ask at a home improvement store or hardware in the plumbing section. I found something by googling called "Plink" but it doesn't ring any bells, so I that's not what I'm thinking of, but it looks like it's what you want, so here 'tis:

From the Queen of clean's link, http://www.diynet.com

Garbage-Disposal Spiff-Up

Need to clean a garbage disposal that smells like -- well, garbage? First put some ice cubes down the disposal.

Be careful and never put your hand down the disposal.

Then squirt a generous amount of dish soap into it. Turn on the cold water, then flip the switch.

The combination of the three will clean the blade and the nooks and crannies in there, getting rid of the smell.

Another way to freshen the disposal is to put some citrus peels in it, turn on the water and then the disposal.

The Heloise column (which I read everyday) advocates the use of frozen lemon slices.

Oh wait...how is your new apartment? I have forgotten to ask about that.

"Be careful and never put your hand down the disposal."???
Really Einstein???

I buy the little balls or the packet designed for cleaning the disposal. I also throw orange or lemon peels in when I have them.
