Shelter for Smokey

So today i was cleaning up the shelter for mr.smokey(feral grey cat). I keep it on my porch so its out of the rain and snow.

You know those jeep tire covers you see on the back of the jeep? well we have a spare cover...so i took the cover and put it on top of the shelter to keep it extra dry and some what warm.

But before i did that...i took off the cover so i can clean everything. I saw on the inside of the cover...was mouse poop and dead bugs. So i had to shake the cover off and put it back on.

Then i put one of those insulated blankets inside the shelter and another insulated cat bed too. But on the floor of the shelter there were dead bugs in there.

Oh and sometimes there would be mice poop inside the house as well.

Is there a way that i can keep the mice and bugs out of smokey's house?

Its not a mouse hotel...

Do any of you have trouble with your cat's shelter and the mice?

Thanks

Mice in the cat shelter? This sounds like a job for Smokey.

I know that straw is good bedding....but what about shredded paper? you know...the kind that comes out from a paper shredder machine? what if i put a good amount of it in the shelter...would that keep smokey warm at all?

i dont have access to straw....so it would have to be hay.

thanks.

Mice continually . .

get into the garage where the 4 ferals have decided to winter over. About every other week we find one or two mice, headless and arm/leg less (need I say deceased). I think it's so their relatives can't ID the remains from dental records and finger prints. Nope, mice in the cat shelter should not a problem (except for the mice).
