prey animal feeding -advice requested

I am thinking of buying some frozen mice for the Tobe to try.

He loves his raw food, particularly chicken and beef and enjoys his offal as well but I'd love him to be able to enjoy eating a prey animal that he would conceivably catch and kill himself in the wild.

Shall I try the little 'pinkies' to start and see how he gets on?

Also, what are the chances that he will know what to do with a mouse if its presented to him? Any experiences/ thoughts much appreciated

Well, I had a *big* smile with this thought: You could always wave it under his nose/paws a few times to get his attention focused on it...and then...pretend to nibble/gnaw on it yourself so when you next wave it at him, he *wants* it to keep you from 'eating' it.

We used to buy The Wanderer (feral for first 9yrs of life) a feeder mouse whenever we went to the Big Town for shopping. He *loved* them. Cat food was 'okay', but MICE! They were the REAL THING, Baby! There was no playing, or messing around with him. Mice were FOOD and were eaten immediately upon presentation.

Wonderful choice for your Toby!

Start with the pinkies, as they are softest and more "meat" like. Once he is eating those, you can upgrade to fuzzies, then hoppers, then adults.

I agree start with pinkies and then work your way up to the big mice. I honestly have no idea how they react to a furred animal for the first time, you'll have to see and report back. You can always throw some of the usual meats on top of the mouse so he understands that the mouse has something to do with dinner time. Or cut open the mouse's belly so he can smell and taste the familiar insides.

Does everyone here do the occasional mouse???

I've pondered it, but I don't know that I could.

I actually had a dream that I was feeding them prey, and the spread guts all over...EW! lol How do you manage it the first time?

Thanks for the advice so far (and for the laugh, Heidi. )

I'll go ahead and buy the little day old pinkies (poor things!) and tell you all how he gets on.

Nope, I can't do it anymore than I could feed dead cats to a raw fed dog , rodents are far too close to my heart. Franken prey for me!

I guess it does sound a bit grim, Xanti. But its what cats eat in the wild and its much better than even the best cat food.
