White vs. Red Meat

Do cats need both red and white meat in their diet? Sophie has shown a very strong preference for white meats - chicken, quail, pork, turkey, etc., but she generally doesn't like beef, lamb, venison or red meats in general. She will eat it eventually, but some of it always ends up uneaten. Is she missing out in important nutrients, or will she be okay as long as she gets the right ratio of muscle, bone and organ?

Re: White vs. Red Meat

The trick to providing a nutritionally complete raw diet is variety. Feed Sophie as many different types and cuts of meats and organs as you can get your hands on, regardless of her preferences. Each meat and each cut has a little different nutritional makeup, so use them all to cover her nutritional bases.

To answer your question specifically, darker meats contain much more taurine than white meats, and dietary taurine is critical to a cat's health. If you are feeding lots of heart muscle, taurine will be covered (heart is very high in taurine), but if you are not feeding a lot of heart, feed plenty of dark meat chicken and turkey, or leg meat beef and venison. These are the muscle meat sources highest in taurine.
