Feeding Kittens Raw

Long story short - I found a kitten who was a stray.

I am feeding it raw figuring you mays well just start him off right. He is about 6 months old and has been living off mice and rats that it catches by the manure pile so does know how to chew

How many meals should he be getting a day? He ate about 3 oz of ground turkey this morning in less than five minutes. Last night he ate a huge chunk of beef in about 15 - it does take a while to get that meat down because it was about the size of a normal rat.

You can tell he wants more - but how much should he get? All he can eat but how many times a day?

Btw, he is undersized for his guesstimated age and he hadn't been eating well and you can feel his backbone way to much.

Thanks so much!

Re: Feeding Kittens Raw

At 6 months he CAN go to 2X a day but 3X is probably better for a few months.

Ditch the ground. Go for big chunks of meatymeat, bone-in cornish game hen, mice or rats, and a little organ (10% of the diet total, half of which should be liver).

Re: Feeding Kittens Raw

The reason behind him getting ground turkey (or any ground meat) is that I have bags of balanced raw meals that are each 6 oz - about the perfect amount for him to be getting. They were originally for one of the farm cats who wouldn't (or couldn't) figure out how to chew their food. once they did I switched them to whole chunks. So he may just get to finish those off as well as getting chunks of meat. I have no other use for them and they defrost MUCH faster than my 5 lb bags that I use for the farm cats

So he may get the small baggies that I have made up in the morning and for an afternoon meal and then whatever the farm cats are getting as his meal at night.

I have never fed a kitten raw before - the farm cats were all over a year when they started so other than how to make it I have no clue how much kittens should be eating
