No longer on raw question
Willie has been off of raw food since like August I think. He gets canned food instead because he was so difficult to feed organs and I didn't want to give that responsibility to my parents. However since switching off he's become an absolute food hound, he's essentially a dog with the ability to leap onto tables. He steals food that is defrosting, he steals while you're setting food on the table to eat, he steals while you're going back and forth from the table to the sink cleaning up, he steals bits of food from the sink and has started looking for crumbs on the STOVE, is any food is left alone for any amount of time, even a minute, he's gonna be up and trying to take it, especially meat/fat/grease. If you are preparing any sort of food he gets on the counter to try and take it from you. It's ridiculous. He didn't do this before raw. During the time we fed raw he did start going after defrosting food, bot NOTHING like he is now. Now this change also coincided with me going to college and with us getting a dog. I'm sure my dad indulges him a bit without me there, he always did it with chips and fritos, Willie's always begged for those. But now he's in your face for everything. Last night he snagged a chicken thigh off a plate while we were still sitting at the table talking.
On the one hand it's kind of funny because he's so good at it, it's not like it's hard to get back from him if it's dangerous. The stove thing bothers me, but more than anything I'm worried because he throws stuff down for the dog, and getting stuff back from him is difficult and the more we have to do it the more likely it is that he's going to become a guarder (he already is a little). Plus not everything he gets tossed is safe, he got a lamb chop (with bone) a few weeks back. The cat threw him a whole bag of dog treats (which tucker ripped open and all three of them shared).
Anyways, my question is, what do you think is the cause of this problem? I feel it lies with switching off raw, but I don't know if he just misses the taste and seeks it out for that reason or is actually physically lacking in some way, like he NEEDS more protein or something. Dad also said he thinks Willie looks a lot more skinny and scrawny now (I don't personally notice it but I'm not the most observant person in the world). He is not too thin and I don't think he has gotten thinner, but I'm thinking that perhaps he's lost muscle mass and that is what my dad is noticing.
Any ideas or thoughts on this?
