Commercial raw

Callie has been on Feline's Pride for a few years now and loves it. But they are having some problems and I still haven't received an order I placed back in December. She loves Rad Cat, but it's too expensive to keep her on that. She does not like Bravo, Primal or Blueridge Beef. Any suggestions for other commercial raw food I should look into? I know I could make her food myself, but that is not feasible right now. I am going to get samples of food from Darwin's Pet. I am debating placing an order from Hare Today, but am hesitant to put in a big order if she might not like it. Thank you in advance!

Hi Sarcal,

I don't know where you are, but I also feed mine a mix of commercial raw with some chunks of meat from the supermarket now and then, but also some canned food as well.

I haven't tried Feline's seems to have a good selection of varied proteins, though, and I love that there's no fruits, veggies, or other fillers you see in other commercial raw. Your post made me curious about its it similar to Rad Cat? (Juicy, very soft and finely ground?) I ask because my two seem to prefer the chunkier texture, so they don't really favor Rad Cat at all.

I've tried smallbatch with some success--they come in "sliders" or patties for felines, and my two didn't care for the sliders. However, when I tried the dog variety in 2 lb chubs with 100% meat (ones without vegetables), they ate it with more enthusiasm. It was also finely ground and pretty soft & juicy, so that surprised me, but then again, it was rabbit, their #1 favorite protein by far! Smallbatch seems to be available only on the West Coast, though I could be wrong. Perhaps a local independent store will be willing to order some for you if you're somewhere else? Or email the company and see what they say?

I am aware of Darwin's Pet as another raw supplier from the Seattle area but I've never tried it since my two are weirdly not into chicken or turkey as much as they love duck, venison, and rabbit! When I do get chicken or turkey, I get a 2 lb chub from my local butcher who also sells pet food grinds since he's a proud owner of two dogs that are also fed a raw diet.

If she likes RadCat, she might like Vital Essentials. I feed both brands to my cats, and they love them both. Vital Essentials is strictly meat/bone/organ, so it's very minimalist, but exactly what our true carnivores need. It tends to be very juicy due to all the blood, so it's texture is similar to RadCat. I feed the 6lb bags for dogs (with all the organs in there, there is totally enough taurine in the formulas), so the cost effectiveness is great. The flavors are Chicken, Beef, Turkey, Duck, Fish, Rabbit, and Wild Boar.
