Separating Cats That Don't Get Along

I would like some advice as to whether it would be okay to separate two seven-year-old cats from the same litter who have been together their whole lives. Normally I know it's not recommended, but these cats do not get along. We got them for our then teenage daughter who has since moved out of state. In the meantime, we have downsized from a single-family home into a condo. So we're thinking about giving her one of the cats and keeping the one that has really bonded with my husband. Our preference would be to just have one cat in our smaller space, but not if it would cause permanent stress to either cat.
