new member with kitty questions

Hi!

I am trying to understand why my kitty is scared of me now. I admit that I misread his hissing at me, (I hissed back). I have been trying to re-establish his trust, but it is not always going well. Sometimes he is just like before, then he will turn and go back to hissing and being fearful.
He will hop up on the bed and sleep next to me and everything is fine, until I get up to go and feed him, then he gets scared and starts to hiss at me again. I don't know what to do. He will sometimes just sit outside the bedroom door, staring at me warily.

It is upsetting me to the point I am wondering if I ever want another cat again.

I'm new to cats but so I might be wrong but I think after a while he will warm up to you completely and won't his at you anymore. He is probably just stressed with having a new home.
