Hello!

Hello everyone, Ihave had cats all my life but have just adopted a new baby boy from the RSPCA who has ongoing health problems that I might need some advice on. I attach a photo of ziggy in his cardboard play house.

Hello! Ziggy is a cutie! Love the different colored eyes. I bet he loves the house too.

Ziggy's health problems

I adopted him from the RSPCA - he had been found dying in the road after being hit by a car. He had a fractured pelvis and other internal injuries and had to have his tail amputated. He was given a clean bill of health after lots of surgery but since I have had him only a month or so he's had an ear infection and ongoing problems with constipation.

It's the constipation I'm most worried about given his accident. The vet is monitering him and it seems to be a motility problem so he might need drugs or surgery. I will continue to see the vet but wondered if there was something re his diet which might help. He has a mainly wet food diet at the moment. I feed him whiskas - tried the better stuff on him and he won't eat it!

If anyone has any suggestions re gut motility I'd be really grateful. Would really like to deal with it naturally rather than have him on drugs forever.

Your poor baby has been through a lot! If you want to try something simple and natural for his constipation, mix a spoonful or 2 of canned pumpkin into his canned food. Do you know if he has megacolon? If so the vet may want to try something called lactulose, which helps to keep moisture inside the colon. It's best to feed canned food only, as it contains a lot of water, and the more water ingested, the better. I am hoping that your guy will not need any further surgery.

What a handsome fella! What a lucky kitty to have found you!! I've read that 1/8 teaspoon of Miralax (readily available at pharmacies in the US) will relieve constipation. It is odorless and tasteless and mixes with food very easily in the powder form. You may want to research natural remedies. The only one I know of is prunes but I don't think Ziggy will want to chew on those. Maybe some prune juice mixed with his food would work?? Just a thought?

Since there's a thread on this topic in the Health section, I'll close this one.
