9 month old kitten doesn’t sit on lap much any more

Hi I got my male kitten Joey in Dec 2022 at 3 1/2 months old. For the first few months he sat on my lap quite a bit. As time progressed he sits on my lap less and less. He will sit on my lap for a few minutes then jump down and lay on the rug a few feet away and sleep. He is now almost 9 months old. He lets me pick him up and enjoys being petted. He is an all around great kitty I’m just sad his lap sitting has diminished so much. I have read that kitties personalities aren’t set until about 2 years old. Is there much hope that as he gets closer to the two year mark he might return to being more of a lap cat? Thanks for any insights! Donna

Just my opinion...but I'd say that Joey is secure and happy in his new home. He's just growing up and not needing as much cuddling from his human mom. He'll come back whenever he wants some personal attention and loving. Just be sure to set aside some time each day to play and interact with him. He's still a kitten and will need some reassurance from you as his world expands.

Some cats are more cuddly then others. My boy cat sat on my lap every now and then . He usually would sit on chair across from me and stare at me. My girl cat is always on my lap and in bed as soon as I go. She likes to sit on me for hours. She is right now lol. Every cat is different. You might just have one that is little more independent but will cuddle with you on his terms when he is ready
My cat was the same way. When we got him at 6 months old, he sat on my lap, on my feet, on the book I was reading :) Now, he's three, and instead of sitting on my lap on the couch, he'll lay nearby on the floor, or in his perch, or on the table...staring at me. LOL. He still follows me from room to room, and he loves chin scratches, and I can pick him up for cuddles...but he's not a lap kitty anymore. I've tried "bribing" him with treats, but it doesn't last.

Your Joey sounds happy and content in his home. And that's a great thing! Does he follow you around?
