We have a really unique dynamic at our house. We have a 16 y/o female who doesn't do much anymore and only comes downstairs at feeding time. She sits with us occasionally. We have an 8 y/o male who is a lap cat and is near us all the time. We recently adopted a 5-month old male who loves to play and loves to be petted. He is a sweety and keeps us entertained.
What is unique is that we've had an outdoor male cat that we've watched grow up as a kitten. We have brought him inside the house when the weather has been cold, and he makes himself at home and uses the litter boxes. He gets close to us but won't let us touch him so we haven't been able to take him to the vet.
Tonight it is expected to be freezing outside, so we let him in again. Cats know when the weather is going to change, and he hung around our door all day. Tonight he has been running around the house with our younger cat and has even gotten our 8 y/o engaged. There is a great dynamic in the house.
Our challenge is that we will have to let him outside again when it warms up. I know the other cats will miss him, and he will miss them, but short of trapping him we don't know what to do. We have just resigned ourselves to the fact that we have 3 indoor cats and 1 (mostly) outdoor cat and they are our family. We are still working on getting him to trust us with the goal in mind that someday he will be permanently indoors. In the interim, the 3 boys are having lots of fun!
