Anyone have 6 Cats??

Took my husband to the animal control shelter today to check in on a kitten we are adopting. Well our hearts melted and broke for two older male cats who have been at the shelter for 3 weeks now. Their owner died. They seemed so friendly and relaxed. I baby talked the fat one and immediately he rolled over and presented his belly to me. The two brothers groomed each other, seemed so relaxed and mellow. Big bright eyes. They just seemed so special to us. We really debated adopting them too. I would do it but hubby is on the fence. If these cats don't get a home soon they will be euthanized.

Problem is that will make us a 6 cat household! I don't think space is too big an issue, I think the cats personalities are so mellow they would get along with our resident cats. I just worry about being able to give enough love and attention to all. We do work from home but are still busy...

Anyone with 6 cats able to have a happy home? Enough love and time to go around? Do they fight all the time? I don't want to get in over our heads but I would hate to see these guys put down. I figure what's a few more cats sleeping all day going to hurt? Any advice?

I was raised with never any fewer than ten cats around. Yeah, unneutered toms cause problems, but none extreme. We never had neutered toms. I love having so many cats around...there's never any lack of love or personality. They always kept eachother company, and when not eachother...well, our laps were never empty, our hands were never empty of cat either! :) I recommend many many cats :)

I have a friend with 6 and no major issues, in fact one that had been a bit of a problem beating up on her really old girl now has a buddy to rough house with and has even lost weight just from increased activity. Her story is kind of similar...She had 3 and went to the shelter to adopt one more, ended up with two because they were supposedly brothers and didn't want to separate them. Then found out that there had been a mix up and the second one was not actually the brother. So they kept him and ended up taking the real brother too.

my3babies and I lived together for a few months this summer. Combined we had 6 cats in my 1000 square foot town home.

Personally, I think it was a bit much. Hard to keep up with the cleaning and feeding. Also, it makes it a lot harder to notice when someone isn't feeling well.

If we had more time or more space, it might have been easier. That said...she's moving back in, in a few months. :)

Can you tell them to let you know if they are planning to euthanize them and before they do, call you so that you can adopt them?

I went from 1 cat to 4 in the span of about 6mths.

We were planning on getting two kittens (siblings) in the future, but decided to wait longer. A few nights later, I saw an ad on Kijiji for a fat black girl kitty who had a family that didn't want her and if she wasn't rehome, she's be pts. Empty threat or the trust, she was so strikingly similar in appearance to my 14 year old I had to help her. The original plan was to basically foster and if she worked out, keep her.

The same night I picked her up, a neighbour of my fathers brought me a little black kitten as a gift. 8O

A month or so later, we decided to get another kitten to keep kitten #1 company (and away from the older guys). Kitten #2 was so sick we had to force feed him and now he's more bonded to me than anyone.

Okay, point is, it's a heckuva lot more work with 4. I've lived with multiple cats before (always under 3), but four is our limit. I find spending 1 on 1 time is harder if you have lover-cats in the multiples (2 of ours are lover-cats, 1 is a semi-lover and the last is finicky). It must depend on your cats personalities. Zaq (eldest) hates to share me, but deals ok as long as he has one on one mommy time. Elliot (baby) doesnt mind sharing.. as long as he's #1! The other two take me or leave me. They have "dad". ;)

The box issue isn't big, we've got 3 huge underthebed storage totes as boxes and we scoop often (and change the litter every 4-6weeks). We feed high quality food (on our way to switching to raw) so it's pricey right now, but soon will be better.

Vet bills can be an issue, as well. They get high with multiples.. especially if your cats are bad like mine.

Thank you for your responses. As for space we have a 3200 sq ft home, 4 bed/3 ba with large fenced yard (no kids) so I think we will be at maximum capacity with 6 cats but not critical.

I am going to ask the shelter if I can't know when they are going to be euthanized so I can come adopt them. I'm sure they will tell me they don't know when. They didn't know when my kitten would get spayed and basically told me "it will happen when it gets done." But, I will try.

I'm picking up the new kitten tomorrow. Maybe I can convince my hubby to give it a try. I figure worse case senario is I try to find them a home on my own if they don't integrate into our little clan. I just feel so bad for those 2 boys.

I have 10, 8 are indoor, though the 2 outdoor ones are spending more and more time indoors. Our house is about 1400sqft.

The kitties have plenty of places to lounge and be able to be together or apart, whatever they wish. If we sit down, we usually have a cat on us or touching us. Usually more than 1 cat at a time. More like 2-3 for Hubby or up to 6 on me.

With this many cats, someone wants to be with you sometime. Usually all the time. We don't have a problem with any not getting enough attention. If they ask for it, we give them more attention. Feeding has never been a problem. For my older girl, I will seperate her for her canned food so she can eat what she wants in peace. When she is done, I let everyone else clean up what she left.

Everyone knows their name and comes when called, so head-counts are pretty easy to do. When I have to give meds, shots, clip nails or spot-treatments, I make a list and cross off each cat that has been done. This way everyone gets treated and no one gets double-dosed.

Lets see, I have 9 I think, yeah 9. I always have to remember, hehehe. I have a home about half the size of yours. It's actually not hard. Just more litter box changing.
I went from 2 to 9 permanent family kitties in a year and a half. It wasn't a big adjustment at all. Just get used to never being alone...

After having this many I don't think I'll ever have less than 6.
Of course you'll have to get used to the looks people give you when you tell them you have 6. There's that "crazy cat lady" stigma. Now I have fully accepted that is what I am though... Bwahahaha...

All my babies get enough attention and love. And I still have time for myself.

How many do you have now?

Six cats? Argh! No way. Not for me! Two maximum. My Mum used to have up to 8 at a time. Way too many for me to cope with though. I'd worry about not being able to give more than two the attention they need.

I have seven. I often have nextdoors around taking it to ten. When it is food time I always have to count them to make sure they are in. Seven always seem like one is missing. We all have seperate bowls and feeding areas. They will go to their own bowl (I have to supervise them because Scooby won't stay at his all the time). The only trouble I have is frontline flea treatments only come in packs of 6!

I couldn't have less than 4 now, it makes my house busy, always a cat around.

I have 3 large house dogs and 2 cats. The dogs are much more demanding than the cats as far as walks and grooming.
The advantage you have is there are two of you for 6 cats, only 3 each.

And when you get them, be sure to give it lots of time. Talley, our kitten, joined us on December 17th. It's only in the last two weeks that i can say that Zoey the Tortie has accepted Talley. They hve started sleeping together!

I have 7 cats and 2 dogs in a 1000 sq ft house. We also have an unfinished basement which is the cat's domain and that we get to use from time to time. Last night as we were getting ready for bed there were 6 cats and the dogs scattered around our living room. It's the best feeling ever.

It can be overwhelming, but I love them them all.

edited to fix from 100 sq ft. to 1000...big difference

I have six. :D Four live in the house and two live on a sheltered porch. A couple of them are special needs cats, and almost all of them are perpetually love-starved, so it's a challenge to keep them all happy and healthy. I feel like I have a second job. But I honestly wouldn't have it any other way. :love2 If your heart tells you that this is the right thing to do, then go for it! :D :D :D Best of luck to you in your decision!

Well, we went to the shelter today to pick up our new little kitten. I asked a girl who works in the cat area when these two brothers would be euthanized and if I could know so I could adopt them before that happened. She said they would not be euthanized since they are so docile and are already fixed. She said they would go to PetsMart after they maxed out their stay at the shelter. I hope she was just not saying that! My husband really felt bad for them but thought it would just be too much to have 6 cats. I obviously would have 20 but I could not talk him into it.

I will follow up in a day or two and keep tracking them. I'll still try to work on my husband too. But, I think all his attention is now going to the new kitten. Maybe if he sees how great the kitten is it will loosen him up. He's not the cat person I am..

I think it's wonderful they're not going to be pts. I hope they get adopted together. :D

The last seven kittens I fostered were adopted together. Not all at once, but the 2nd to the last litter of 4 kittens were adopted together in pairs. The last litter of 3 kittens were all adopted together.
So, I am hoping the chance of these two staying together is very good...
