bad to give all 500 mg of lysine at 1 meal?

i've seen laurief's recommendation many times to split it up into 250 mg 2X a day if you're giving that much, but that was after i'd been doing the whole 500mg at once for a long time already. so is it bad to do that? does she not absorb that much at one time or something? i did try splitting it up for a while, but then she stopped giving me nice poops daily. she skips days here and there. don't know if the lysine change had anything to do with it. i know it coulda been anything, of course.

Hi Maggie,
With what I've read, don't worry if you give it all at once!
The only reason to split it, is to keep it at a steady level in their system!
Since L-lysine is water soluble, anything extra is pee'd out!
No known overdose has been found, however like so many things, dont go over 1000mg.s a day (in the case of a Cat Cold/Herpes flare up!)

All of that.

I will say that Jitzu's 'regular' dose is 1000mg/day, I go over that when she's having a worse time. I've tried to cut her back to 500mg, but every time I do she has a flare up, so she clearly needs the 1000mg as a maintenance dose.

I read a study that suggested that at a level that could be considered dangerous the cats all stopped eating the doctored food, so that suggests to me that you'd need an awful lot to overdose. As Sharon mentioned it's water soluble, so it's a pretty low risk med to give.

Actually, I don't ever remember recommending giving it twice daily, though it certainly wouldn't hurt to do so. I only give it once daily to my own cats.

doh! sorry if i misquoted you laurie. i thought i read a couple suggestions like that when i was first doing a search on this and just before i decided to actually post my question. glad to hear, tho, that the 500 mg at one time is ok. i may try splitting it up again and giving Angel a dose with dinner as she does seem to get pretty snotty in the middle of the night, and lately it's been green snot.

10 minutes in a steamy bathroom before i moved seemed to work great, too, but my new apartment has higher ceilings, 2 gallon/minute water flow (hard to build up steam with that), and a fan that is almost always running and management says i'm not supposed to mess with it.

gonna try a steam vaporizer and set up a makeshift little steam room instead. she's gonna love it! :jump

Thanks for all the help everyone!

No problem, Maggie. There is someone on the forum who recommends twice daily dosing of L-lysine ... doodlebug, maybe? At any rate, twice daily sure wouldn't hurt, and it might even be better than once daily. I just don't know for sure.

Green snot may be a sign of bacterial infection. You should run that by your vet. Your girl may need an antibiotic.

thx, laurie, i will ask the vet about antibiotics. i know when Angel was at the shelter for 2 1/2 years they did do antibiotics for her at least a couple times. she's had weepy eyes and nose from the day i brought her home, too, so her eyes are permanently stained. gives her character, tho.
