So as those you may have read my least thread will know, my boyfriend got us a new kitten (a 5-6 month old spayed female) last monday to keep company to the 6 month old, male resident kitten.

And well, things are going well, I've seen them eating together/from the same plate and generally being close to one another without any fighting.

HOWEVER.

Voldie, the male, keeps batting at the female. He doesn't quite touch nor hurt her, but he'll bat like mad at her and she'll do the same and then he'll roll all over the floor close to her.

She's a very loving kitten but seems rather shy and does nothing but look at him, and occasionally, hiss at being bated at.

Is this aggressive or playing behaviour? Should I be concerned?

Well, he's just testing the waters, so to speak, by sparring and seeing what response he gets. Even if Voldie does make contact, it's likely more play than being mean. At 6 mo. old he's likely testing to see who is dominant. I wouldn't worry, this is normal kitten play behavior. Sit back and enjoy it.
