Every cat I've had loves the slicker brush, So I bought one for Toby.

As a brush, he tolerates it. But he really likes biting the bristles. I don't know if he's attacking it because it rubs against him, or if he likes rubbing his teeth and gums against it.

Has any of you seen similar behavior with brushes?

Most cats like to bite brushes and combs. I usually solve the problem by giving them one to bite on while a brush with a different one.

There was a similar thread not long ago, where I commented that you're supposed to give them one to bite while you brush them with the other. But they get frustrated when they can't manipulate their brush as well as I manipulate mine, so they drop it quickly. So now I alternate between letting them bite it and brushing them. I also use a toothbrush in between brushing them, to massage the sides of their mouths, fangs, lower lip and chin, which is what they like most about biting the brush.
