LOL - I'm impressed! Xander must have worked hard on that!

Carrots is obsessed with cardboard boxes. He doesn't chew them (sorry, customise them!) though. He obviously doesn't share Xander's talents! He just sits in them. At christmas we got a bunch of presents given to us in an old cardboard box. Carrots immediately took it over and we haven't had the heart to throw it out yet. It's on it's side in the hallway and Carrots lays in it for hours sticking his paw out for a surprise attack whenever anyone walks by. Sooty's personal challenge at the moment is finding sneaky ways of getting Carrots out of the box and staging a take over. No luck yet though.

cardboard boxes

Young cats especially like to chew on cardboard because it scratches their gums--when they're teething (at around 5-7 months) their gums are itchy and inflamed, and rubbing them seems to help. Some cats just pick up the habit and keep it forever! My old girls were styrofoam sculptors, too good for cardboard I guess!

And to Xander, buddy you need to learn not to play with hands and feet. Cute now, but when you're 15 pounds, you're gonna put your folks in the hospital with punctures! NEVER EVER play with kittens with bare skin!! It's a habit much harder to break than to make. I've know adult cats to get euthanized for biting when they were deliberately encouraged to do it as kittens.

Cheers,
Dr. Jean

 That picture reminded me of when I presented Jet with an old cardboard box to play in. It was quite soon after I'd got him and he was still very nervous, but that got him out from under the sofa in no time. He LOVED it. I had to throw it away eventually because he'd 'customised' it a bit too much, but a few days afterwards I saw him in the garden rummaging through the rubbish, and then dragging something out... his beloved cardboard box (by now a soggy mess as it had been out in the rain). He just couldn't bear to be parted from it!

OK you guys have box customizers... Mooch just likes to tear the tape off of them... lol... (That was during a move in which we NEEDED the tape on the boxes). Gandalf is a box sleeper though. :D

Dr. Jean, I agree with you about discouraging hand play--we've done that with all of our cats. But this was too cute of a misbehavior not to photograph....I have noticed that Xander is a little meaner than our other cats, so we do have to discourage him more...but he's still young and learning.

Aww, my cat Sylvie also attacks boxes and then hides in them for a long time. There's this one box that she loves best, it's really old and tattered and she just loves making it worse. One of these days it's going to fall apart! She prefers paper bags, though. They make crinkly noises, unlike boxes.
