Cat Collers caused my cats neck to cutt all the way around

Before any of you go jumping on me, please read this. I am very upset. We chose a cat coller for our cat and left it on her for 3 weeks. It was very loose. One of those with the gold ball hanging down in front. After 3 weeks, I decided to take it off because during a bath I noticed a cutt under her hair. I almost never got it off. It is suppose to be a safety collar so if the cat gets caught in a situation, it will come off easily. I finally had to cut it off to find her entire neck was cut all the way around. The coller was not too tight. Too bad I threw the package away or I would call the company.

Anyone else ever have this problem?

I've seen some cat and dog collars that are made of nylon webbing that is, IMO, too stiff, and I can see where the edges of a collar like that might be very irritating. Also, it could be something like a contact dermatitis if the cuts aren't clearly defined...the webbing could possibly have irritated the skin either mechanically (rubbing) or chemically (like an allergy).

Some safety collars have elastic sections in them which expand to slip over the cat's head if it's caught on something, and others have plastic breakaway clasps that are supposed to release under sharp pressure...was it a breakaway or expandable collar? I've seen a few breakaway clasps that I wouldn't trust to open when necessary.

Most of the collar problems I've seen have either involved flea collars causing a skin reaction or collars on neglected or abandoned kittens and puppies that are never taken off, causing neck, throat, and airway problems as the animal's neck becomes larger than the diameter of the collar.

Personally, I've never been able to keep a collar on Assumpta long enough to have a problem, but if you can, go back to where you bought the collar and find out what kind it is.

This was one of those breakaway collars. The cat didn't grow in to it because it was loose to begin with, and never got tight around her neck. We checked it often to make sure it wasn't too tight, and I even put my fingers under it to pet rub her when I would hold her, so I know it didn't appear to be too tight. It hung down is all I know. Any looser, we could of pulled it over her head to take it off.

It would help us if you could answer our questions.
Gives us a better idea in order to help you.

It isn't possible to answer each and every question, lol. I've given you all the info I have. My question was have any of the members here experieced anything simular with one of these collars. If noone has, then, that is all I really needed.

Sorry but that describes every type of collar there is.

Half of any cat collar out there is a break away, if it isnt a break away then its elastic.
Ever cat collar has a bell hanging down it.

Without knowing its material, if it was a flea collar (chemical or herbal) im afraid we arent going to be able to help you.

As to answer your specific question no ive never had it happen.
Ive used elastic collars, break away and chemical flea collars. I no longer use a chemical flea collar though after learning the dangers. Poor pebbles has a bold neck from one
Just a thought, has she seen a vet? If it has just rubbed away the fur and she seems fine she will prob be okay, but if there is any open wound she should see a vet. Under a collar is where dirt builds up, so there is a risk of infection. :)

Please let us know how she goes ;)

No, every collar out there where I live is not a breakaway collar. I answered that way because I was asked was it a breakaway or expandable collar. There were several kind to choose from when I bought it, and I got the breakaway for safety issues. We also thought the ball was cute, as the other brands didn't all have balls hanging on them.

I actually found another board where people were a lot nicer, and not so shrude. I found out a lot there, and I am going to continue posting there for any problems me and my Cat have. People didn't try to act like the 'Knew more' than me, but actually were very nice and helpful.

I think you took all the replies the wrong way. I haven't been here for that long but I know the atmosphere is pretty friendly. They were just trying to help you by getting more information about the collar. I know not all are breakaways and not all have bells on them... but sometimes the materials are different.

Yeah...I'd have to vote for either sharp, uneven edges on stiff webbing (I've seen some pretty sharp, stiff cat collars) or possibly a bad reaction to the materials used in manufacturing the collar. If the cuts are straight, visible cuts, I'd bet the edges of the collar or the hardware (like a sharp edge on the plastic clasp) made them...but if it looks more like an irritation/abrasion, I'd say maybe collar rub or sensitivity to materials.
