We switched from a live to a fake christmas tree last year. Cats were fine last year. This year, one of our cats is totally munching down on the plastic, fake pine needles on the bottom branches. He has thrown up twice. We are worried about how it will harm him. also, we are worried he will break the tree lights by biting through the wiring for the lights which goes through the plastic pine needs on the branches. We don't leave him alone with the tree when the lights are on so we know he won't get electrocuted.

We tried spraying the bitter spray. he seemed put off at first but he is back to biting the leaves. can't tell if he is still swallowing.

We heard about citrus but we can't really put anything that is food stuff that might stay on the tree and get moldy or sticky or weird and ruin the tree.

Any suggestions? I hate to have to not have a tree this year.

To deter a cat from chewing an artificial Christmas tree, use bitter sprays or cat-safe deterrents on lower branches. Apply cat-friendly repellents like citrus sprays or essential oils, creating a scent aversion. Employ physical barriers such as aluminum foil or double-sided tape around the tree's base to discourage chewing. Offer alternative distractions like toys or treats away from the tree and supervise the cat's interactions with positive reinforcement. If issues persist, seek guidance from a veterinarian or animal behaviorist for further assistance.

Good luck!
