Our cat Momma, who is 9 years old, has gone from being an almost 11lb cat down to a 7lb cat over the course of the last year or so. And it's not from her not eating. She is constantly begging for people food and it is so bad that she gets up on the counters and steals whatever she can (and she never used to be this way). She even gobbles down dog food. I have taken her in several times to see the vet and we have done bloodwork three to four times in the last year with all results coming back normal. My vet is thinking that she is hyperthyroid, but her thyroid is always normal on paper. Anyone had a similar experience? I just want to find out what is going on with her before she wastes away to nothing.

Hmmm-sounds like feline diabetis to me, but it's strange that all her blood values are coming back normal! I have no idea what to tell you!

Have you tried getting a second opinion? Sometimes different vets are like night and day as far as experience and methods they use to find out what's going on inside a cat. Did you get a fecal sample done as well? My only thought other than diabetes or hyperthyroid was a tapeworm.

Same situation

I don't have an answer for you because I am still trying to get one myself. My beautiful calico Phoebe has blessed my life now for 18ys. I know that sounds old but it feels like yesterday that I found her as a stray. She has gone from a very fluffy 12lbs to 5lbs on a her bad weeks and stablizes at 7lbs on a good week. She does the same thing as yours with constantly looking for more food. My phoebe has been tested this last summer and all her major organs were functioning properly. Her blood checked out for all the same things they checked yours for. I am just at a loss. I realize she is old, but she has been so babied for all these years I truly believe in my heart she could very easily make it a few more years. The vet is quick to blame it on her age which is very frustrating for me. I can see her ribs and back bones when she eats and it is killing me inside. She plays, purrs, and still puts our dog in his place. I live in an area that does not have much for medical facilities for animals. I am going to call the vet again tomorrow morning. Now she has severe diahrea and I actually have to clean her everytime she goes. Things don't look good, but as long as I know she is not suffering I am going to keep trying to get an answer other then it is her age.

Thanks for the replys. I haven't gotten a second opinion. I think I may ask our other vet at work to take a look at her bloodwork and see what he thinks about it. I agree, two vets can look at the exact same thing but see things completely different.
