I adopted four delinquent kittens who learned to survive on city streets. They were vicious in the shelter which did not know what to do with them other than send them to me. I was able to put an end to their biting and scratching and they are now affectionate but I still have not been able to get them out of all their bad behaviors. If I have steak, they work as a team so that some will try to distract me so that one of them can jump on the table and grab it and run. They have been successful at that more than once. I have to keep dry cat food in the refrigerator because they can get into any cupboard. Even then, I have had meat mysteriously disappear from the refrigerator. They are able to crack open the side of the new Temptations treat packaging. I went to the deli last week, came home with a roast beef sub, put it in a box in the kitchen for protection while I went to the bathroom. When I came out the remnants of the sub scattered through the hallway.

One of their behaviors they have not given up is dumpster diving. They have made a nest under my bed. I cleaned it out today and there were over fifty cat food cans, empty bags of potato chips, and styrofoam meat packaging. I bought a heavy trash can with a pedal which they cannot tip over (their previous tactic). I don't know how they do it but they are able to open the lid, climb in, grab anything with food scraps, and get out. Then they drag their booty to the opposite end of the house and under the bed.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any catproof trash/recycle bins for a kitchen that are reasonably easy for a person to use routinely.

My cats try to grab food on the kitchen table if they can. Besides one of my cats loves doing dumpster diving and is able to open the kitchen door. Therefore I had to install a chain door fastener. Now we can lock the kitchen door from the outside when nobody is in it.

Well???? ya know I don't think anything will work big jim -- a cats gotta cat! these 4 little ninjas have honed their hunter skills into a team sport. They took the 4 of them out of the jungle of street survival but for these 4 the game is still on. You might, I say might have a chance if you bust the team up and pack each one off to a different household. But look at it from a cats-eye view. Street kitties are facing food uncertainty all the time. They gotta grab when the grabbing is good and stay on the scent of a sure thing. I call it Harry Houdini skills. And in this case ---- what skills one lacks the other one fills in on. Hey -- I'd hook up video cams all over the house and catch these ninja's at work and goooo viral! Maybe if you find out how they are pulling off these raids you will find defenses against them. It may be only one of the 4 is the culprit. Barring collecting hour upon hour of surveillance footage the obvious question is how can you hope to place these guys for adoption? ever?

mmm, if you choose to adopt this cat --- your gonna need one of these in your kitchen - its a laser sensor alarm system -- and another one just for the trash can.
